thanks again bandphan. i will definitely go with your suggestion. monoprice.com is going to save me ~$400 because I'm about to buy my HDMI cables and TV mount from them as well. what a fantastic site.

Just turned on my 663 for the first time.

Afetr a slight panic (miniscule amounts of volume through the speakers) I discovered I hadn't put the CD input into the right holes on the 663.

Before plugging them in to the right holes I turned the receiver volume down and it was a good job I did

This thing is LOUD:D

I think I am going to like it.

Now to wire the rest of the speakers and wait for my sub to come from Epik.

I hope this helps in your receiver decision making process; not very technical I'm afraid.

Initially I'm planning on the following components:

1) 1080p plasma
2) PS3 as bluray and game player
3) definitive pro cinema 1000 speakers/sub
4) cable or satellite w/ dvr input

I'll be starting with a 5.1 set up but want a 7.1 receiver for future upgrades.

Sorry for my confusion but I had read somewhere that with the 663, you need to use a separate optical cable for each input for audio since it won't accept the audio via HDMI. Was this bad information?

If I can have the following components and only need HDMI cables to hook everything up, that'd be great.
Curious if you ended up making a decision???

I am in a similar situation.

Setting up a home theater / media room with plans for a 50+inch Plasma
and a HTPC that uses NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 video card with HDMI output...I am planning to purchase a mid-price ($500 to $1600)AV receiver as well to be more or less the center of everything... So I want one that is capable of 7.1 channels, I would like multi-room functionality...multiple sources/multiple rooms (2-or-3), I would like more HDMI inputs over fewer...figuring one for a DVD player, one for cable/sat, one for PC...at least 3!

I have been shopping around and like the Yamaha RXV863 and RXV663, but I was also thinking of something like a RXV1800 or a Onkyo TXSR875 or Onkyo TXNR905

Would love hearing what your final set up is? also what you would do different?

Anyone else care to comment on these ideas? sorry if the whole HTPC powered by Nvidia Hi-def sounds noob.

Re-kindling this thread. I've got a 1400 and a Yamaha rep recommended I just keep it until I can afford an 1800 on closeout or 1900 as it is a much better amp than the 663. I really would like 3 HDMI inputs (the 1800 has 4) but the 863 price is not nearly as good of a value as the 663. I've read about problems with the Onkyo getting to hot. I've always used Yamaha receivers because of their quality and reliability and never been dissappointed - others I have. But I venture to ask, does anyone make something with 3 HDMI inputs that is at least on par with a Yamaha 663 that doesn't have any issues where I won't regret not sticking with Yamaha?
