Yamaha 657/Definitive Tech Speakers Or?

I am thinking about purchasing a Yamaha 657 and Definitive Tech Procenter 100 and 4 Promonitor 100s. I like them for HT but I can not make up my mind about their use for music.
I read some where that the Definitives sound bright on music.
Can someone recommend:
Other bookshelf speakers I might listen to that wold be less bright. I can pay more but like the size of the Definitives.

Can the Yamaha 657 be adjusted to compensate for the brightness or is it adding to the problem?

Thank you

The Yamaha can be used to EQ the brightness. But also, what price are you looking at for the Def. Tech bookshelves?

I personally like Phase Technology's PC line of speakers. For bookshelves, you would be looking at either the PC 1.1 or PC 3.1 speakers. Check out their website:

I would also look at the m22ti's from axiom, they are a little bright and should have a fairly dead room to play in, but they sound wonderful.

You could also look at the Ascend Acoustic's CBM-170 speakers, they sound similar to the axioms (in an well treated room), are smaller, and are not as picky about room acoustics or placement as the axioms.

Definitive and Yamaha go very well together, both are very flat sounding. My system isn't bright sounding at all.

Compare

Definitive
Paradigm
Miller and Kriesel
Polk Audio

All go well with Yamaha

I'm planning to upgrade my 3 front speakers, & Def Tech is on my list. My center channel sits on top of my TV, & I don't want too large a speaker sitting there. The ProCenter 100 would be a great size. I'm also thinking of Klipsch RC-25 & RB-25, and Boston Acoustics VRC & VRB. Those centers are larger than the Def Tech, but at least slimmer than the Axiom or Ascend.

You should audition def tech as well as other brands in your price range and buy what sounds best to you. I own def techs and have no idea of where the "bright" tag comes from. I have read several profesional reviews about various dt models and not one of them ever said they sounded bright.

as for the topic, Brightness is a measurable effect. If Def tech speakers are physically bright, it will show on a FR graph. If yamaha recievers are bright.....they're not. Myth, Voodoo, that explains that.

One mans bright, is another mans dull. Its alllllll preference. Go give a listen....If you have, get em! :)

I have the Yamaha RX-V657 with a pair of Axiom M22ti + the HSU STF-2 Sub and it's a GREAT setup for music and movies ;)

Gee, I know there's a "New Thread" button there, but I'm not very clear on how to use my mouse & click on it........

rdarr is considering the purchase of small speakers, as am I. Maybe you read my post as asking for opinions on my purchase, but it is an attempt to let rdarr know that Klipsch & Boston Acoustics might neet his needs.

Def Techs

I own the Def Tech BP20s and SM 450s. Both are excellent speakers for their price range and above. In a room with good acoustics they sound wonderful. They have silky detailed treble response ( my fav trait ), plenty of bass and an amazing 3 dimensional. Lower midrange is a little on the light side but nowhere near terrible. If you set them up in a room with hardwood floors the sound will take a turn for the worst and you ll get early reflections all over the place due to the bipolar nature and terrible freq response. Perhaps thats why some people call them edgy sounding. I compared them in a showroom to a pair of more costly Martin Logans and the Def Techs sounded more dynamic, cleaner, and realistic. The Logans however had superior imaging and a more narrow sweet spot due to their electrostatic nature. All pref of course.:)

I had the def.tech. 100's w/c2 center and 200tl sub for 4 years until i upgraded.I'm still using a pr of 100's for surrounds and still have the 200tl sub. They are very good for HT as well as music. The thing with the system is to wire them via def.tech. recomendations which i had done after speaking with "chet".It's not your typical wiring.I dont think you'll go wrong with the def.tech's.The only thing i suggest is to get the c2 center over the pro100 center,it's alot better.

Any opinions on using the Mission m30i or Mission m32i with the rx-v657?

Thanks
