Yamaha 5790 / JVC 52" DILA TV Problems

OK.....I'm feeling really dumb about this, but I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong.........

I'm in the process of setting up a home theater system (though at this point its really just a stereo system as the only connected speakers are the two fronts). The receiver is the Yammy HTR-5790 / The TV is a JVC HD-52Z585.

Here's my issue:

I've connected everything (at least I think I have). I have sound from the speakers if I listen to the radio. I have sound from the speakers if I watch a DVD or video tape. But I can't seem to get sound from the speakers if I watch just regular old TV.

I'm fairly sure its one of three things, but I can't for the life of me figure out where I've gone wrong:

1. I've overlooked an audio connection between the TV and the receiver
2. I've got a setting in the TV that needs to be switched on/off to push the sound out to the external speakers (I've played with some settings and can get the TV's internal speaker to switch off, but can't get the external speakers to switch on).
3. I've got a setting on the receiver that's wrong that isn't allowing sound to be passed through the receiver.

Has anybody had any issues like this? Any input on what I should be looking at? Any good diagrams online that I can look at to see if my wires seem to be set up correctly?

Help!

Well, one clear requirement is that you have a stereo audio cable running from your TV to the receiver, but presumably you have hooked one up.

One thought: On my Yamaha, there is just one input that is labeled DTV/CBL, as opposed to two inputs, one labeled DTV and the other labeled CBL. If you want to run audio from a cable box to the receiver AND run audio from the TV itself to the receiver, you have a problem, as there is only one pre-labeled input that looks like it should be used for both.

If you have a digital feed from a cable box to the receiver (either cox or optical), plus the analog feed from the TV, you might be feeding two sources to the same DTV/CBL input, even though there are separate places to plug the cables in. If the DTV/CBL input is running in its default AUTO mode, it will automatically select the digital input, which might look like its present even if there is no actual signal (like with the cable box off).

You can get around this by connecting the feed from the TV to some other input (like VCR1 or VCR2).

Sorry if the above has nothing to do with your problem!

Thanks for the input...

I'll take a look at it this evening....I'm open to any input. This has driven me completely over the edge!

I also have an HTR 5790 with same set up (only fronts and sub at this point) and initially had the same problem you are having.

I fixed my problem by changing settings in my Cox digital cable box. I had to the audio output settings (narrow, wide, fixed, etc.) until it worked.

A little more explanation of how you have the TV sound connected would be helpful. Is the TV audio going into the tv and the receiver or to the receiver and then the receiver?

On thing that disappointed me was the fact that if I wanted to use the yamaha for video switching I couldn't listen to the tv without turning on the receiver.
