At 4ohm 89db, it may take some pretty stout electronics to get to the full capabilities of these speakers.
85dB @ 4 ohms would be concerning, but 89dB is not inefficient so it really shouldn't take a beast of an amp to drive them.

The Phil3 speakers are 85dB/2.83V/m and 4 ohms. My Denon 3312 AVR never had any issues with them.

If your AVR has a robust amplifier section then it probably won't have an issue handling the load, but 85dB @ 4 ohms is not very efficient and will cause other receivers to struggle.

I'd love to hear what your impressions are once you have them all adjusted and setup.

Well, you can't just go by the sensitivity rating. First, those aren't standardized, so one speaker's 85 dB could be another's 88 db. And the shape of the complex impedance curve is critical. The Phil 3 presents a virtually flat load to the amplifier, with no wild variations in phase angle. Other speakers might have weird stuff going on in the midbass that could throw the amp into overload. Of course, the receiver has to be happy with a 4-ohm load to begin with. I'm sure there are some cheap ones out there that aren't.

Hi guys so the surround s5 shouldn't be a concern at 87db and 4 ohm?

Also how do the drivers on their cinema m6,s5 compare to the 99.36, as they mention SEAS and ribbon tweeter for the 99.

I see that the cinema use HDF which would increase cost just trying to figure out why the price difference.

87dB @ 4 ohm is on the low side of normal, but shouldn't be a struggle for all but the least expensive receivers. 85dB is leaning toward inefficient, and as you go lower it would be wise to have a receiver with a pretty stout amplifier section. Or separates.

The Cinema Series just came out, so there isn't any data on them yet. At this point it's not really possible to do more than speculate.

Hi psbfan9,

I wanted to provide a couple comments regarding your concern.

1. XTZ Cinema M6 speakers meet THX requirements with 89dB/1M and 4 ohm nominal (3.1 minimum) impedance. Almost any receiver will handle this.

2. With a very commonly available 100W/ch amp/receiver, this will give you 109dB per speaker which means 2 speakers will make 115dB. 115dB should be more than ample loud for most people using a "typical" receiver.

Thank you for your interest in XTZ. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Jason
