Went to best buy to demo the RB61s with my OWN music and listened to the Def. Techs SM350

At high volumes the RB61s won because it had some clarity..But both seemed stressed. They sounded kinda muddy with heavy metal music. And with trance/techno they just couldn't keep up. at all.

It could be because of the long wire runs and the fact that they use 16 gauge wire doesn't help. I dont know, but I do know that i do not want to get either of those.

I did listen to the floor standing Klipsch RF62 and damn those were amazing. I have a feeling that i might just have to get some floorstanding speakers.

What do you guys think I should do? Are the Ascends or onyx xls able to play rock really loud with no real signs of stress or bottoming out??

Any bookshelf speaker will sound 'strained' at high volumes if driven full range. They need to be crossed over properly to (preferably) stereo subwoofers for optimal sound. If you can, I would definitely recommend a high quality floorstanding speaker. My personal recommendation would be for the Vandertseen 2CE signature.

Yea im thinking i should just go with a good floorstanding set..the klipsch RF62s sounded amazing. I just really do not want to spend over 400 on a set..which is not gonna leave me with much options in the floorstanding range...

Im gonna keep checking around online see if any good deals pop up and ill look into those speakers

What is high levels to you?

I occassionally go crazy and play my Xls at volumes around 100dB at listening position (9 feet or so away).

They play pretty clean, but like everyone stated, every bookshelf will have its limits.

Have you thought of the X-SLS or MTM? Both are full size towers and apparently have quite impressive bottom end.

Any kind of variety, but obviously the louder musics will be louder...Im not listening to Tori Amos at 100dB.

If I get a chance I will whip out the meter today and see what kind of averages were talking about.

With the shipping you quoted the SLS are still cheaper than the Athenas, are they not?

No i think the SLS were like 4 dollars more..which is nothing but at the same time im paying almost a 100 dollars just for the shipping..

have you herd the bostons Acou. I was asking about? I know those towers should be able to play what im looking for..

..when you do your music today play some heavy metal or any fast paced techno..let me know how they hold up at loud voluems..Thanks in advanced

I can believe listening at 100dB peak levels, but no way at 100dB average levels.

You sound like you might possibly be a candidate for a pair of Cerwin Vega speakers.

I can't comment on the VR 1's, but I love my VR 2's. There's a link in the deals section where you can get a pair of VR 2's for $500!!! That's a great deal.

yea well i was just looking at the CR95s and they only have 1 speaker. So now that is out. I need to go test the Vr1s out..i know the 2s sound good..when CC has them on clearance its gonna be like 300 a set..im gonna try to look for the BAs

If those Bostons use the kortec tweeter, I wouldn't buy them ( considering your "Loud" listening").

IMO the Kortec tweeter, when played at high volumes, is a bit harsh..

I have the BA CR75's (Bookshelves- Kortec tweeter), and when played loud, they are harsh IMO.
The VR's use a different tweeter.

Some folks think the VR2 sounds better than the VR3,and definitely better than the VR1 ( I concur, but over < 1 hr of listening).

EDIT: A Guy named Steve Callas has the VR2's, and is a huge fan of BA speakers.... ya may wanna contact him........... he's available over at AVS and elsewhwere.
