Would I be stupid to buy a Denon 3805 NOW?

I've always wanted one of these, and found one for a pretty good price, new in box. My question is, is it worth it since next year, all the DTSHD, and Dolby True HD receivers will be out. I assume I could still use the pre-inputs to receive HD audio as PCM, correct?

If I was going to buy a 3805 new-in-box the price would have to be *stunningly* low: particularly if I was interested in the HD audio items you mentioned (don't forget that the 3806 [which is out now and not that expensive] has the Audessy EQ system and is XM ready-things I would've liked myself). In all honesty, the 3805 is a jammin' AV reccy unit, and if you can live without the items mentioned above, and if the price is good, I'd say jump on it. If, however, you really want DTSHD, or Dolby HD, or the Audessy capability, then the 3805 isn't the deck you want at any price, good or not.

Denon receiver

If you can get a good buy on the Denon 3805 than go for it. Why pay twice as much for a comparable receiver with HDMI 1.1 (Denon 3806) that will be obsolete in a year anyway? Both models will require you to use the analog inputs with HD players.

In the next couple years, resonalby priced receivers will include HDMI 1.3 and the hole HD-DVD and BluRay battle should be worked out. That would be a good time for another receiver upgrade.

I found a 3806 advertised on Yahoo! for $789 at Alectrics: but even if Bluesmoke has found a new 3805 for half that, if it's not what he is looking for he's thrown away $340 he could've saved for something with the specifications he actually wants.

I bet we're comfortably into the next decade before A) the format war is over, and B) before the public embraces whichever HD technology wins. In the next couple of years however, I wouldn't be surprised to find that HDMI 2.2 is out and being touted as the solution to all our A/V connectivity needs, despite the number of patches, switches, and connectors found in an HDMI cable (it bears repeating that HDMI wasn't developed to maintain A/V signal quality, but to ensure that the data remain copy protected).

I can think of quite a few very valid reasons to buy the 3805, and to *not* buy the 3805; it all depends on excatly what Bluesmoke wants, don't you think?

I think if you can get a great deal on a 3805 you would be smart to go for it. About a year ago I upgraded from a 3802 to a 3805; while the '05 has some real advantages over the older model (eg more component inputs, video upsampling, 0.5 dB volume steps) it doesn't really 'blow it away.' I could still live pretty happily with the '02 if I had too. Eventually new audio formats may make it 'necessary' to upgrade again, but a 3805 should serve you well.

BTW, some things I upgrade pretty frequently, but recievers isn't one of them. I've only upgraded the rec in my main system about 3 times in the last eight years. Okay, you could also say 4 times in the last eight and a half, but you get my meaning.;)

I know what you mean. I was going to buy a RX-V2600 when the price drops but now I think I am going to wait another year. I just want a bigger jump over what I have now.

If you don't want the new formats (when they come out) and can afford ot toss a somewhat new receiver if you DO want them, I'd get it.

I can't afford to upgrade now and again when the HD formats come out.

The 3805 IMHO isn't that huge of an upgrade over your Yammy 5960 - which is a nice unit. Street price on the 3805 (according to pricegrabber.com) is $589, while the 5960 is $320. If you're looking for more amplification, go for a separate 2 channel amp like the Behringer A500 for $179. If you've found a 3805 for under $400, and can sell your unit for $275, then definitely go for it. It may be a few years before the new HD sound technology hits on all cylinders while the format war continues.

Billy, my mailbox is clear. Please re-send. This 3805 is in the GTA. Did you get your's from Kennedy HiFi? Since you're in Markham, that's the closest dealer I think.
