How much do you think the magnet weighs on that thing?
Have no idea. But for sure, it must require either a forklift or a few Mr. Universe guys to carry. :D

Jeez, aren't most voice coils made with 38 or 40 awg wire?

That subwoofer (the large one with the man standing next to it) was built by Richard Clark. It was run using something like 10,000 watts of rms power. It is in a bread truck and used the cargo area for the enclosure. this was done at least 5-7 years ago. The cone was 60" or 5 five feet!

For spl competitions, competitors use test tones to "burp" the systems. Basically the car is designed to amplify a specific frequency. The "burp" usually lasts about 3-5 seconds. Forget about low distortion here, the amplifiers get fully clipped to drive the subs.

Dynamic low frequency peaks require huge amounts of power for them to be heard at a linear level with the rest of the source material. That is why we see biggger and bigger amplifiers on bigger and bigger woofers.

Well, I can't verify this story, but a few years back, as the story goes, here at a large LA area aerospace firm I work for, several technicians moved a large vibration test hydraulic shaker head (used to vibration test a 12000 lb satellite) up against the building's 30 x 100 ft roll up steel door. They commenced to play Xmas carols until the local constabulary arrived. Not exactly a low distortion device, but very effectice.

If the wire was that thin it would cause way too much resistance.

Well, considering it's not a production item, I'd say it's probabally about $100k to buy it.

I checked out MTX's website and they said It would be available at "Elite" dealers starting in October. An article on the site said the first one went into a car in september. Im not sure if its a publicity stunt used to get their name out or not. Either way, That thing looks brutal! Dont know if anyone saw that Pimp My Ride episode but I guess they put one in the back of a car...How much power would you need to drive one? What about a Home Theater? How big would the enclosure need to be (could you imagine a cylinder)? What kind of amp would you use?

Yeah, I saw that episode. It was hilarious. The guy gets in his car and says WTF??!! They needed a fork lift to bring it in and an engine hoist to get it into the car. There's actually a clip of the install floating around the web.

Who would want it in a home theater? I wouldn't touch MTX with a 22inch subwoofer poll.....

But seriously MTX sucks and blows...
