Wiring a volume control

I have two speakers and I want to have an in wall volume control because the receiver is under the stairs. I am wiring the speakers right now but do not have the volume control. I am guessing I will have the 2 sets of speaker wires come into the volume control box and 2 sets coming out. Please someone correct me if I am wrong, I am wiring today and tomorrow.

This is the box I should use correct

Wiring w/ VC

Yes, you will have two sets of speaker wires going into and out of the volume control. Keep in mind that you should use CL2 rated in-wall speaker wire for this type of application. It has a plastic sheath on the outside of the insulated wires. Since you don't have the VC installed yet, run the wires from the receiver to the VC location, leave a loop of extra wire, and continue to the speakers. You can cut the wires and add the VC later. Also, if you only have 2 speakers connected to the receiver, you don't need the Impedance matching feature on the VC.

Here is a high quality Russound VC that I will be using for my house speakers:

One more suggestion, I have an RF remote which I can use to adjust the volume of the receiver and cotrol other components from anywhere in the house. This could replace the VC in your application.

Thanks for the help. I still want the VC, I like the idea of the RF remote, which one do you have? There are going to be 6 speakers hooked up to the receiver, would i need to go with the impedance matching?

Not if you are running one speaker per receiver channel.

I picked up the URC-300 and RF basestation for $107 from Amazon, it is one of the least expensive programmable RF remotes. It works great, has extensive macros, and it very customizable, but I have to manually learn most of the commands. A harmony might be easier to setup, but their model with RF is over $300.
