Hey guys, I'm looking to re-wire my HT speakers. I don't want to spend a lot of $ but want something fairly good to improve the sound. I'm thinking 12 or even 10 AWG wire. I need about 175 to 200 feet. I'm remodeling and want to replace my 14 AWG from Walmart. Anybody got any suggestions for me? Where can I get something good? Thanks.

.....let me just say this....you work with SoundKing wire one time, let's say 12 ga and bigger, and you'll spit on the monster blister-packs at Rat Shack.....the 10 ga. commands attention from you at first sight...."soft", good as can be had, copper strands....417 of them, maybe 413, not sure, but right in there....working with the 250 roll of SK 10 ga. was a VERY pleasing experience for me....about to order the 250 foot roll of SK 8 ga. for subs and small cannons at about 60 cents a foot....I know, I know, but I can't wait, the 10 ga. to me is beautiful....the 8 ga. will be beautiful, and huge, haha.....I'm blessed, I've got stereo stuff on the way, and at Christmas....Gentlemen, I raise a grape soda from Wal-Mart to you esteemed colleagues, and wish you only the best of the season, with a blessed and prosperous new year following.....

Gene and Mule (Ron) have given you some great starts.
I will add, IMO for speaker wire - there is no better place than Westlake.
Westlake uses the same exact Beldin wire that Bluejeans cable does.
At a fraction of the cost (non-terminated)
You can pick up the same wire for 0.19 a foot for the 12awg.
Let me go find a link for you........
Please know, their shipping is minimal but there is a minimum of purchase as well.
Your 170' will easily make the minimum.
Ok now to find the link......
(found it, but know the price has gone up to 0.21 a foot for the 12)

Here is the 10awg (which I recommend) (it is at 0.28 a foot - when I bought it, it was 0.21)
EDIT:: Hmm, well I am pretty sure it was 0.21, might of been less - I would have to check my receipts

Will those WalMart cables be too short? Can some be used someplace in the post remodeled room? There is nothing wrong with those cables, even at 14ga, they will serve you well. You will not tell the difference between it and the 12ga you are contemplating. It ain't going to happen.

Besides the recommended AH sources, Home Depot has 12ga, if you really need 12ga in the first place.

I agree, to use those 14awg wires at 20' lengths or less should be perfectly fine.
You will (or rather) should not hear any difference.
I certainly would recommend to stay away from anything under 16awg.
Even on short runs, I had problems...........
(EDIT:: Yeah, for the heck of it. I had tried 18awg for one of my old center channels - and it most certainly had EFI/RF problems - I went back to 12awg and all was cleared up.)

Thanks guys, gives me something to look at and think about. I do need about 45 to 50' for my back surrounds. Anybody else have any suggestions?

12 guage from Home Depot, Radio Shack etc. or one of the inexpensive online providers of speaker wire the names of which I don't know since I have a Radio Shack just down the road. Others will chime in with those web sites I suspect.
