Will my Onkyo 304 Power Polk RTi6's?

So yeah, the title basically says it all. I got the 304 as a gift, and would like to set it up with a Polk Csi3 center channel speaker, and a pair of Polk Rti6 bookshelf speakers.

The 304 can provide 65 watts at 8ohms. I know that this is a pretty bottom end receiver, but will it be able to power the speakers at moderate levels without damaging the speakers or catching fire?

I'm pretty new to the audio world, and while I've read a lot I can't seem to find a definitive guide to wattage recs...

Thanks!

The receiver will be able to power the Polks very well. Your Polks have a sensitivity of 89dB 1watt per meter. I wouldn't worry about any problems at reasonable volume levels as long as your room isn't too big.

The reason you cannot find much about wattage recommendations is because they are not too important most of the time. If your receiver is not giving the speakers enough power you will hear clipping which is very obvious.

Most mid-level receivers are not about power, but more about they toys they come with so no worries :).

Ah, well that's great to know. I was sort of worried I'd have to spend money on a new receiver that had already been earmarked for an stf-1 sub:)

Thanks again.

Heh. Yeah, I made the mistake of ripping my entire (several hundred disk) CD collection at 192kbps several years ago. I guess I just wasn't anticipating how quickly storage would get so cheap.

I don't think I ever want to go through that hideous process again:eek:

I don't think 192kbps is all that bad, but I use VBR for ripping all my .mp3's now.

I use 192 kbps for all of my mp3s and I couldn't really tell any difference between 192 and 256. VBR is theoretically better as it will allocate extra bits for the demanding parts but many players cannot accurately calculate the length of the song if it is VBR.

If you have some pics of the new setup, shoot them my way. Enjoy!
