I'm not sure what you're suggesting here, 'Rat; but taking the exact screen size-to-distance measurements out of the equation for a second -- do you think there will be a noticeable difference just going up eight inches from the 50?
Follow AVRats advice. What's he saying is by reducing your viewing distance of your current steup by what he suggested,, you are simulating what a 58" screeen would look like at your current viewing distance. Its just a temporary thing and you and the Mrs can then disguss amongst yourselfs whether or not you think the expenditure is worth it. :)

Is there anyone else who can lend some input as to whether going another eight inches up in size will make some kind of visceral difference over my current 50 -- in a general sense?

I don't understand your point here. People can talk your ears off but until you do what AVRAT suggested, you will never get the idea for yourself. I fail to understand why you are reluctant to try his suggestion. Its cheap, costs you nothing and is easy is to change back. :) I strongly urge you to try it and if you feel you've gained no viseral experience from this suggested experiment, then I believe you have your answer.

If you’re not willing to move your seating for a simple/short (2 hr) movie test, then my perspective is that your viewing angle will only increase from 15.9º to 18.26º not so much that you’ll notice a decent enough impact to warrant the cost of the new 58”.

It sounds to me like you are looking for affirmation that spending the money on a larger set is worth the expense. I don't think it is. 8" isn't going to really make a difference in your viewing experience.

I fail to see what the viewing angle will have to do with anything here; I will be at the same angle, I'll just be bringing the screen size up eight inches...

Now, your sentiment is that this will not be warranted as far as an upgrade? The first time I brought this issue up in a totally different thread, the opinions leaned towards the fact that even a "mere" eight inches will yield a difference in impact...

I suppose in a way it can be seen as this -- ultimately, we cannot fit anything larger than a 58" set in this entertainment center space, so we need to make that work; are you suggesting that there won't be any perception of increase in impact whatsoever in these eight inches over the 50 we're running now?

Thanks for adding a plethora of sarcastic, useless nonsense amidst the 23 posts you have contributed here! Appreciate it! ;)

Train wreck ends...some good advice and alternatives have been given. You are the one that has to make the decision, nobody is going to be able to tell you in a "general sense" if this will be an appreciably improvement for you.

TV Aspect Ratio Calculator

Pearl, as a temporary test, move your viewing distance closer 2' to 11' from your 50" display. This will provide approximately the same viewing angle as a 58" display at 13'.
