Why So Many USB Cables?

As others mentioned - 15ft is max you should ever use before going to active cables. This is includes length of extensions which should avoid is possible.
The cable you've linked should work, but If I were you, I'd also get the 10ft just in case - they are so cheap.
Thanks Bored. I plan to get both a 15' and a couple of the 10' since they are so inexpensive. I am moving my desk to where I have had my kitchen table. That gives me more room to place my new SVS SB12-NSD's. Going to see how this works out. Assuming that is does, my MLP will be about 12' from my desktop. Therefore, I am within the 15' limit. Have other cabling and stuff to order as well. I will know exactly what I need once things are moved to where they are going.

Cheers,

Phil

A long USB cable run with potential for a weak signal and picking-up noise along the way sounds too risky to obtain accurate results and pretty graphs.

The $250 setup below will let you run a mic cable (XLR) out to your back yard into your neighbors house and still present strong accurate graph readings.

Behringer ECM8000 Microphone > XLR cable (long distance) > Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface > USB cable > Computer.

I wouldn't try to use an Android tablet as a replacement for my laptop!

Personally, I need a laptop to do work for myself--CAD work, and electronics hobbies for example. There is no substitute for a good keyboard and mouse! Though I do typically use a trackball instead of a mouse.

Laptop for work and surfing the web. Tower PC for my HTPC, streaming, and as a music server. Android tablet is more for my "field work"--pulling up pictures and Youtube vids when I'm soldering or doing mods that I have never done before--basically as a handy reference guide and a quick way to snap some pics.
Well, if push comes to shove I may end up ordering a very cheap lap top. Might look for a refurb before buying new. But, at the very least, I am going to try to do this w/o a lap top. Might be shooting myself in the foot so to speak, but I am an el cheapo........LOL!!!!!!!

If the UMiK 1 needs to be at ear level when taking measurements, how does it fit unto a tri-pod? Guess, I could always tape it if need be. But, rather have a stand and/or tri-pod that it will fit on. Thoughts?

Cheers,

Phil

I have had very good luck with Dell Refurbs from NewEgg.

Personally, for a laptop I am only looking at Dell Latitude (or maybe Precision) or Asus. Maybe Samsung. If it isn't from 1 of those 3 manufacturers, then it isn't the laptop for me.

Thanks for the info. However, my run will NOT be that long. It looks to be about 12' at the longest. I also prefer to stay w/the CSL UMiK 1. However, that mic stand looks rather interesting. Just need to be sure that the UMiK 1 would fit unto it. Really don't want to tape it unless i have to.

If I need to go w/a lap top to do my measurements, then I will be sure to check out the Dell refurbs. Have ordered from Newegg many times. Thanks!

Can I get a mod to correct the title of this thread? That is, change the Who to Why please. Thanks!

Hey Phil,

As long as your pc is in the same room I'd try that before buying a laptop.

When I got my mic stand it had a clip style holder like one of these and I had mics of a different shape (Audyssey) and diameter (Omnimic2) and wanted to use both. I had a mini tripod I used before and thought that's about the right diameter to fit in that clip and it was, been using that ever since (and the Audyssey mic attaches to the minitripod with a screw mount). The Omnimic2 fits (sorry didn't make that clear before editing).

Yeah, PC is in the same room and MLP is not more than 12-13' away. So, I think that I can get around the lap top thing. Still may look into getting a refurb before it is all said and done. Would only use it for audio type stuff. Other than that, it would just collect dust.......LOL!!!! Thanks for the link. Will be sure to check it out!

Cheers,

Phil
