Why is volume on Blu-ray Player so low?

I've noticed that the volume is considerably lower on my blu ray discs than on content coming through my cable box. My speakers are connected correctly and I've noticed this problem both on my new Denon receiver and old Yamaha receiver. When watching movies on HBO's HD channel I can set the volume on my Denon receiver to -40db-35db and hear everything clearly. But I can get as low as -15db while viewing blu rays and still have to strain a little bit to hear dialogue in quiet scenes. I have the Denon's dynamic volume turned on for cable content but leave it off for blu rays, but I don't see how this could produce such a dramatic difference in sound level, and as I noted before I noticed this problem on my old Yamaha receiver as well. Dynamic EQ is left on for both blu rays and cable content.

Compression.

TV has a whole lot more of it than movies do.

Then, to boot, you are applying Dyn volume only to cable as well.

I almost never listen to movies as quietly as -15 db. Probably 1 out of every 50 movies. Every once in a while, I put on some old B/W movie from the 50s, and it runs pretty hot. I'd say it's probably closer to 1/100 movies, and for those IIRC it's set to something like -20db.

imo, i'd lose anything that says "dynamic" :)

check to see if your blu-ray player's "dynamic range control" or whatever is "ON" or "AUTO" ... if they are, turn them off.

I noticed that control the other day on my blu ray player and I think my receiver has a similar function, I'll give that a try and see how it sounds. This has nothing to do with the dynamic range control feature, but I've also noticed that when I turn off the Dynamic EQ on the receiver my bass totally disappears, and I really have to jack up my subwoofer.

Just noticed my blu ray player doesn't have an off option for the dynamic range control. It has four options: auto, standard, tv mode, and off. Which should I use?

Sorry I put the last option as "off." The fourth function is not off it is "wide range." So the four options for the DRC function on the blu ray player are auto, standard, tv mode, and wide range. Sorry to post so much but I can't get the edit function to work.
