Why Is My New AV Significantly Lighter Than My Old AV?

I just upgraded my 20 year old Yamaha RX-V540 with a new Yamaha TSR-700 (RX-V6A) and they both purport to have approximately the same power. (My old RX-V540 is being relegated to a bedroom).

The new AV is significantly lighter than the old one and I assume it's because its transformer is smaller.

What negative impacts can I expect with the smaller transformer?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Transformer, case materials, heatsink all play a role. Have you compared bench testing?

I'm curious your impressions with sound differences.

None particularly outside general capabilites. I have a variety of gear.
Sorry, was inquiring more about OP's thoughts about sound capabilities between very old vs. new AVR. Maybe the old one has a bigger power supply, etc.

LOL thought you were the OP :) How do you define "sound capabilities" outside of amp section capabilities and dsp options? A bigger power supply can be nice if you're pushing things, many don't....then there are pre-outs for flexibility with more powerful amplification as needed.

It's mainly a thought about the older power supply and if it seems more capable than the new model which mayyy have a smaller power supply.

Just depends where you want your amplification....if you truly want larger amp capabilities an external amp is a better choice. The question is for your use, does it make any practical difference?

It's like, have AVR's stayed the same, gotten better, worse? Twenty years being such a long time I'm curious.

Again, depends on your speakers and particular use. I'm happier with newer gear myself, but each of my systems has a bit different requirements, too (I'm running four avr based systems in various rooms of various size/use).

For just big power for 2 or maybe 5 speakers, maybe a generally "lighter" version is more readily marketable. Many don't care or use all the power at all in any case. Depends on your actual use.....

There are stories of Chassis having extra weight added that absolutely call into question whether heavier is necessarily better. If its not measurably seen specifically in the weight of the Power Supply, what does it matter? Now, especially, consider shipping costs, trimming the fat is important. Every aspect of needless weight should go away.
Personally, I'm hoping that if I buy another AVR, it is built with high quality SMPSs and ClassD Modules in the Amp Stage. If it weighs more than 35#... WTactualF!?! :D

Well was thinking both of his were AB designs, but don't think Yamaha has a range of class d home stuff yet.

No.
Likely not.
I forget, I think one company is maybe going there, but questionable to efficacy.

But WE ARE THERE!

Hypex and Purifi measurements at ASR prove that they are among the best Amps available. Hypex, especially, is among the more affordable of the higher end, but for Atmos coverage, even ICE could cut it. :)

Well I hate to admit it but weight is becoming a significant factor in my purchases these days due to some old and new "fitness" injuries. I'm trying to keep my amps and speakers less than 30 lbs, lighter if possible. Damn I hate typing that out.

Weight can be okay if equivalent types of comparisons, but that's where it also becomes more difficult to do well. I'll take some of my class D amp weights without regard to AB designs generally in terms of the advantages of weight in the design. Audibility? Meh, depends on actual use/execution but not likely a great considration IMO>

So what you need to do then is spend on DIY NC400s and SMPS600N400 With Ghent Audio Chassis for your higher demand channels (at least front 3 as MonoBlocks...) then add some Buckeye or VTV Amps for your remaining channels... and get a good quality AVP to handle the processing.

I am considering NAD C298, or something Purifi plus miniDSP Flex. I am at a crossroads where I may even go minimalist stereo oriented system 2.0 or 2.1 and run PCM for movies, foregoing surround sound. Simplicity and Dirac, maybe Room Perfect is how I'm imagining my new system. Also possibly NAD M10, Lyngdorf TDAI 1120.

This has been running around my mind for a while now.
