Ok. I played with it for hours this afternoon. Took all the digital hook ups off. Ran just the one red/ white analog hook up and no change. Tried all the different settings on the player and receiver.... no change. In all of the listening that I did I found what is exactly what is wrong. It's not that its too flat. There is too much mid range. I will always set my Eq's to pull down or pull out some mid range. I like a very high and low sounding system.....
Bingo. Thats my problem. It can not be fixed with the system as well.
How much did you have to pull down the midrange? Midrange shout is such a common loudspeaker vice. It is hard to describe the effect, but it is not pleasant and varies with the exact peak frequency of the shout. It is even more tempting in the era of HT, as it is a cheap and improper way to improve speech clarity and make the movie experience dramatic. Cinema speakers have been know for this problem over the years, going right back to the famous Altec Voice of the Theater. It may be good for HT, but unpleasant for music.
Since I roll my own speakers, I'm pretty much confined to auditioning speakers when I'm out of town at a loose end. I don't want to waste time from dealers I'm might need a favor from. But basically I'm appalled at what is generally on offer.
