Why are my towers "muddy"

I bought a complete energy system with 3 speaker towers and the marants sr5009.

Centre channel sounds great but my 2 towers are really muddy. I put on the banana plugs so I don't think connection is issue...any advice?

I have not done the mic calibration yet as I still need to install surrounds.

Use those towers for surrounds and get new speakers for your fronts. Suspect your mud is an exclusive domain of the speakers. Your AVR is nice. No mud there.

How far are they from the walls?

Which model of Energy speakers?

Go ahead and run the calibration, it may improve things and it is free to try. You don't need surrounds to run Audyssey (at least I don't on Marantz SR-6001 or newer Denon models)

How close to the walls are the towers placed? Do you have a pic? Towers need more room around them than bookshelves because they reproduce more bass. Having them too close to the walls reenforces the bass towers produce making them sound boomy and muddy. I would pull them away from the walls and play with speaker positioning before replacing them.
