The tendency to run subs at higher output is generally a cover for trouble in the upper bass and lower midrange.

For OP,
as stated before, for setting up I would keep it at normal (-10 in AVR), = +1db over setup tones @76db (only for taste, not for compensation)

And since it was not stated in your (OP) first post, FOR MOVIES, I put it at 'what I am in the mood for' (could go as far as +15db over reference, yes enough to shake the flourescent lights out 2 rooms over in the kitchen)

For music (where there is tons of stuff below 60Hz), I also put it at what I am comfortable with (same applies to shake).
Call me a tinkerer.

Side note:
music range is EVERYTHING (includes classical to heavy metal), except: Country (which I only listen to older country) and Jazz (which I only listen to newer jazz)

I run mine about 8db hot but that's because I hate my neighbors and they live half an acre away. I have to keep them up somehow.

My general rule has been -5dbls from my fronts. Even then, the sub is quite loud for my room size. I just wish I could have more tactile bass shaking me, not the floor.

Yeah, I am also guilty of playing my Subwoofer +5dB hot when my wife is not watching movies with me.

I run my sub and surrounds a little hot and noone has ever noticed If someone ever comes over to my house with an SPL meter, they will be shown the door.

My subs are adjusted on the fly - sometimes hot, sometimes really hot, sometimes really, really, HOT..

I guess I'm guilty, arrest me for liking to have alot of bass... that makes me freakin ignorant.... Now do I like really crappy bass... sloppy rattling the outside of my car, mouldings on the side of my car moving... rust falling off the side of ones ghetto machine bass.. or One Note Fart Boxes....? NO !!!!!!!!

I like tight controlled smooth bass that hits when it needs to hit - and HIT HARD, that what I want... I want it to be able to keep up with my mains, Instantaniously... like a bullet from a gun... I want it to scare people in my house... CRACK and then nothing... !! I want people to come to my house and look at me like I just shot someone... "I can't believe that just happened..."
