Forget the specs. I would go with whatever center channel is Timbre Matched to these speakers.

Wharfedale Pacific Evolution 10

Yes match the center to the front Wharfedale Evolutions

Mazersteven is correct the center should match the fronts to maintain timbre ( seamless sound).

You should look at the matching Wharfedale Evolution Cetner. Here is one you might want to consider, Wharfedale Evolution 2 Center Channel Speaker, Successor to the Acclaimed Pacific Evolution Loudspeaker for $509,95
http://www.wildwestelectronics.net/wharfedale-evo2-center-channel.html

specifications:

Specification

Bass Driver 2x 125mm 2 way
Soft Dome Tweeter 1x 25mm
Nominal Impedance 6 Ohms
Frequency Response 80Hz - 43kHz
SPL 1W @ 1m 89dB
Max peak SPL 108dB
System Fb 70Hz
Crossover Frquencies 2.2kHz
Dimensions H x W x D (mm) 170 x 422 x 296

These specs look very close to you number 2 choice.

Here are some other Wharfedale Center speakers:

Since they are from the same vendor there timbre might not match exactly , but should be close.

Good Luck!

I would never buy anything based on specs. Listening is the only way to know.
Also, I agree that timbre-matching with your mains is very important.

Actually that second specs is this particular center that you mentioned. But i needed some blind answers from the specs to see what you guys will say. Anyway i guess I got my answer.
Now i have to go tell the wife that members of the forum said I should buy it. :D

What about the freq response range? I thought it should be lower maybe to 60 Hz.

No the center channel is mainly for voice and dialog. 60Hz is okay, after all is is not a subwoofer. Your subwoofer will handle the lower frequencies, that unless you want Darth Vader's voice to shake your drinks off the coffee table.

Good luck on the approval process

Do you mean 80Hz is ok. The lower end of the range is 80Hz not 60Hz

About the process I have to do some male-nagging this weekend :)

I agree that the specs are almost worthless. There is no substitution for listening to the possible candidates with your own ears.

Pick up that Wharfeldale center and enjoy!

Yes Sorry; not sure whether I read it wrong or it was a typo.

========

In telephony, the usable voice frequency band ranges from approximately 300 Hz to 3400 Hz. The bandwidth allocated for a single voice-frequency transmission channel is usually 4 kHz, including guard bands, allowing a sample rate of 8 kHz to be used as the basis of the pulse code modulation system used for the digital PSTN.

The term voice frequency can also be used to refer to the band of the electromagnetic spectrum between 300 and 3000 Hz.

The voiced speech of a typical adult male with have a fundamental frequency of from 85 to 155 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz. Thus, the fundamental frequency of most speech falls below the bottom of the "voice frequency" band as defined above. However, enough of the harmonic series will be present for the missing fundamental to create the impression of hearing the fundamental tone

Summary : If you are 85Hz or above you are in excelelnt shape on the Center Channel

I would look at the EVO 2 and get a listen if you can. I own Wharfedale speakers and I actually went with the Diamond 9.CM over the EVO center. They did update the crossovers in the EVO2 so it may not have the lobbing issues that I heard with the EVO.

Don't get caught up in specs, especially with freq. response when there is no +/- db spec. It's meaningless. Let your ears be the judge.

So I have been thinking of going to get the speaker to test it at home and see how it fits in with my system. I'm not sure if the store will let me. But i will ask anyway.

As for persuading the missus. I guess I will ask her to buy me the center as our 2 year anniversary present. Its this month :D:D
