Which one (used)? NAD T770 or Outlaw 1070

If you are thinking of the Totem Rainmakers, get a power amp to work with a Marantz AVR that has preouts. Don't believe too much in those claims about high current and IHF dynamic power by receivers. Receivers in general are not designed to drive 4 ohm and low sensitivity speakers.

I've heard the NAD T770 drive the Rainmakers in a large room and it was able to push them well past loud without the hint of distortion. NAD will deliver into 4 ohms without strain or fuss.

I am sure they do. You spend the same money on a Denon or Onkyo and they will do that too. For 4 ohm Totem speakers, I would still go with a power amp for peace of mind.

They are the best speakers I've owned, they even trumped the Paradigm Studio 100s in my room. I think I'm going to avoid bass reflex designs for now, as most of them are not adequate. I seriously believe that at the suggested retail these ARs had in 93' they where quite undervalued.

I wish you could have a chance to compare the Classic 18 with the AR3a or even the AR6. I have little doubt for the cleanest bass, air suspension is the best design and I have never heard cleaner bass since the days of those AR speakers. Too bad now that watts are cheap and clean but speaker manufacturers still won't go back to acoustic suspension designs. I guess it is the "green" thing.
