LCD vs. rear projection?

I'm not actually considering the 70" LCD, price wise, the 46"-50+" LCD is much closer in price to the rear projection 70", so those two are my choices. but I didn't want the size difference to influence the answer either way.

I wouldn't buy a rear projection tv myself, they only look good in a very dark room.

After I posted, I got to thinking of my dark green HT room with the brown velvet curtains and the black plastic inside the windows... I do have a room dark enough for a rear projection tv... so I am going to see what 1080p models are out there. Might be able to get a larger tv than I thought

i have never A/Bed the samsung and sony RP's ... (side by side)

it seems that with the imminent arrival of HD software, rear projections can now be viewed at a closer distance as compared to SD software

At 8ft...? a 42in panel is ideally viewed at...well, 8ft. This is with a 720p signal. The same tv size with a 1080i/p signal would ideally be viewed at only 5.5ft! Much farther and the eye/brain can't detect any difference. Don't get caught up in the number game. Higher the res...closer you must sit for eyes/brain to take notice. As far as which set/technology goes well that depends on room lighting, placement, main use(tv or dvd's) and several others however, LCD and rp are good technologies that are proven. A dlp is nice but you have to consider lamp life. Black levels are are concern w/ lcd's but they are improving greatly. Fast action blur is also a concern w/ lcd. I'm not too much of a stickler when it comes to video. Sure, I want a good/great pic but don't neccessarily need the best. For me it is sound/audio. My input...DLP, Samsung. LCD, Sharp or Toshiba.

i do plan to input 1080p when I upgrade my tv ... so it wont be 40" by then ... hopefully, it would be at least 60-70"
