The link to the center speaker lists the frequency response (+/- 3 dB) as 35 Hz to 20 kHz. Get real..............

Actually it says 38Hz without specifying(+/- 3 dB), and why is that so hard to believe? This is a large dual-vented enclosure with two 6" drivers. The venturi lineup is known to produce excellent bass. It's the highs and mids that need a little work IMHO.

I'm not sure if I understand the point you're making Azn_plyr. The unmodified BIC's are respectable at their online prices. It just so happens that one of the most highly regarded speaker manufacturers, EFE Technology, has seen potential with the BIC America lineup. Ed offers the modified BIC's as a budget speaker for those that can't afford his EFE line of speakers which are considered by some to be the finest speakers at any price. The modifications are not a necessity for these speakers, but for a small price, you can let Ed tweak the crossovers. This is a bonus, not a negative.

O I see what you mean, but there are some reviews at audioreviews that says before the Ed mod, they sound lifeless and boxy, but after the mod, they sound much much better.

But for a safe bet, I would think some Athena's B1.2 would be perfect.

speakers to purchase

Just throwing in my $.02. If you're willing to spend around 150$ on jbl & bic products you might want to head over to av123.com and check out the xls.

http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=82.1

They are amazing for there price, I will garantee you won't be dissapointed. They have a huge sound stage with great imaging. While the xls is voiced exceptionally well, it's not as melodic as the rocket line (many x's the price) but still amazing for the $$.

Bookshelfs as main fronts - Options

Very soon I will need to replace my very large main fronts with a small pair of bookshelfs, due to lack of space. These will have to sit directly next to the tv so they must be magnetically shielded.

I currently have a very nice sub, a center, and rear surrounds. To say the least, I'm very overwhelmed by the many choices of b/s speakers and I really don't want to shop all around town listening to many different ones only to become more and more confused by all the differnt models.

Is there any easy way to understand how to pick a speaker by looking at the spec's given? Since most speakers look pretty much the same, what characteristics do I look for when buying ie: materials, driver size, woofer size, full range or not etc..

By the way, I'm not concerned with blasting the sound, I just want to hear very decent sound at lower levels.

Budget is around 500.00 for a pair

Current set up:
H/K AVR 630
JBL L8400 600 watt sub
JBL L810 Studio Series Surrounds
JBL EC35 Center
JBL E 100'S fronts (soon to be sold)

If you are running a crt (non projection) based tv and need shielded monitors go for the ascends or onix ref .5's. Amazing clarity and presence from both. Or look in the classifieds on the av123forum.com for some used rs250s for around 400ish.

I completely agree. These look like a great deal. I'm very tempted to purchase a pair of these, but I think I'll wait to see what their upcoming center and floorstanding speakers look like. For the $200 budget, these are looking very tough to beat.

They truely are not just for the price but OH MY the performance! Sound stage and imaging almost rival my Rocket 550s which are $1k. The clarity of vocals and piano are spot on aswell. Comparing the x-ls to the ascend htm200 isn't fair just for the fact that the ascends are 1/2 the size, sealed and more exspensive :-( but they do an admirable job for what they are. Both offer amazing bass ascends - 65-70 hz while the xls go deep probably well into the 40s. I haven't run test tones through them so that's just guestimating by ear.

Now the 170s would be on the same level as the xls. I believe someone will be doing a comparison of them on av123 shortly so keep an I out. If anyone wants a more details feel free to PM me or the guys over a av123.

Have a good one,
JR

I believe most bookshelf models nowadays are shielded. If anyone is aware of bookshelfs made in the last five years that aren't shielded, please correct me.

Specifications, if accurately stated (which is really the important thing, isn't it? :)), can be an important part of helping narrow down your speaker wants and needs, but most definitely shouldn't be the only criteria your speaker decision is made. Two different speaker manufacturers can produce essentially the same size speaker, same configuration with the same specifications, yet still have very contrasting differences in their sonic signature. Because of this, most will want to hear first-hand their speaker options before committing long term. This is where being able to demo a speaker or some companies having 30-45 day satisfaction/money back guaranties is an important part of your decision making.

In addition to specifications and listening evaluations, aesthetics can play a role, also. Due to the smaller form factor of bookshelf speakers, many manufacturers are considering their integration with existing furnishings and their WAF, which was more of an afterthought years earlier.

With you're budget being approximately $500.00 for a pair of bookshelf speakers, you should be able to find quite a few that may suit all your needs. If you'd like specific recommendations, just say the magic word... ;) -TD
