Denon 3300W vs Marantz SR 5011

I've narrowed it down to these two from A4L

You probably are aware Denon and Marantz are sister companies.

You would have to get the Marantz SR6000 series to get pre-outs.

So to me, the Marantz 6000 series (110WPC, Audyssey XT32) is more equivalent to the Denon 3000 series (105WPC, Audyssey XT32).

The Marantz 5000 series is more equivalent to the Denon 2000 series.

You are right about Audyssey MultEQ XT only for the 5011, that could be a show stopper for some people.

Yep a quick look at the 5011 it has both pre-outs and the multi-ch in. I don't see any others in the 5xxx series except the newer 5012 which has the same features (and still only XT). I'd still prefer a Denon with XT32/SubEq over the 5xxx avrs, or go to the 6xxx series to get that.....

Simply put, Denon is better value.

Denon/Marantz are the same company and they are selling products which have very little actual functional/performance difference (if any).

Consequently, they cultivate the image of the Marantz as higher quality and the Denon as a higher value product in order to appeal to a broader cross-section of the market.

I have both and they are so similar, that my only legitimate justification for buying my Marantz is "I like the way it looks!"

Just being honest!

Only you can decide which looks better and what you are willing to pay for it (if you care).

I would guess they sell about three Denons to every Marantz, and most Marantz buyers are older people who remember Marantz for their vintage audio legacy.

Having Audyssey XT32 w/Sub EQ HT is certainly a BIG help if the OP is going to do dual subs. It certainly made a BIG difference in my smallish room. Highly recommend!

Agree, except we must forewarn people that they may not like the resulting flattened bass. In that case, they would have to manually adjust the level (on the Audyssey audio screen not at the sub) of the subs.

Knowing a little bit about production and maximizing profit centers, I think at the upper end...the Denon shares parts, etc with Marantz. Much like a Chevy would share parts with a Cadillac under the GM umbrella.

But Denon on the low end has a lot more to offer than Marantz. To hit those < $500 pricepoints they have to make some compromises that Marantz doesn't. That, in addition to their separates and reference products kinda keeps the Marantz brand elevated imo.

Exactly! If you remember correctly it was you that helped me get my subs setup correctly. I can not even tell you how many times that I had to run and rerun Audyssey. The reason being, it was setting my levels way too low. Eventually, I got it there.............LOL!!!! Still appreciate all of your help Peng!

What did I say that wasn't true? I never said Denon didn't make separates or reference products, but imo they are not marketed the same as Marantz, certainly not in the circles I have visited.

It's the part I put in quote that I thought wasn't true. You didn't say Denon didn't make those products, but it sounded like it was implied in your post, and I bet I am not the only who felt that way, overreacted I guess.. Anyway, I should have just mentioned that Denon also made separate/reference products so that should not be the reason for the Marantz product to be elevated as such. On the other hand, Denon does not seem to market their higher end products in North America in recent years so I have to agree with you on that, if you meant that's the reason the Marantz brand got elevated. Yep...my angle was mostly brand marketing...not so much that Denon didn't offer higher end.

At least here in the U.S. they seem to position Marantz as the upscale brand with their distribution and marketing efforts.

That the same time, after reading the post you responded to I agree it could have been construed the same way by others...not the cleanest verbiage...lol
