Good morning, I'm a little confused and need some help. I have a Def Tech systtem sporting a pair of PM700's for the front, a pair of BPX's in the rear and I am in the process of purchasing the CLR 2300. I'm currently using a Yamaha receiver, the 667, to drive the system, but I am now moving to seperates. My question is regarding the five channel amp. Given that the PM700's are powered, how much power do I actually need for this setup?

My local dealer, whom I've been dealing with for over 15 years, tells me I don't need anything more than the Anthem PVA5. 105 watts just don't seem enough to me during the times in which I like to crank it, which isn't very often.

He carries Halo, NAD, Anthem, Yamaha, Denon, Krell and Integra, as far as home theater goes. He believes that there is no need to spend more money for the Halo because he doesn't believe that there is no significant gain in performance. I can get the PVA 5 for $1099, and the Halo A52 for $1495.

For the record, I have also considered used amps, inlcuding both Rotels and Sunfire. These amps range in power from 125 to 200 watts per channel. Thanks for your assistance.

I would go with the NAD

I think he's probably right, but why don't you take the amps home and demo them. I know it's hard to a/b them unless you take a bunch home at the same time which is probably not feasible, but at least have a listen. Also, this way you can see if your concern about volume is a valid one.

For the record, I was offered a new PVA5 by an authorized dealer for $950, walking in right off the street while on vacation in an unfamiliar city.

But the Emotiva XPA-5 started shipping yesterday, 200w x 5 for $799 new with warranty. Try to beat that.

Second that. Tough to beat for the money and loads of power. Rotel, NAD, and Outlaw are also good picks.

You don't need anything more than what you have. Since it is a preference purchase rather than a needed purchase, then get whatever you prefer.

PM700s...BPXs...CLR 2300...five channel amp...much power do I actually need for this setup?
Those Def Tech sub-powered speakers don't need a lot of power Since most of the power requirement goes to the subwoofers. So the only drivers you'll be powering externally are the tweeters and midranges, which will not require that much power. So yes, 100 wpc x 5 is more than enough.

But for $1,000, I would rather get that Emotiva XPA-5 200 wpc x 5 for $800.:D

Thanks for the responses guys. That Emotiva sounds like a killer deal. I've never heard any of their stuff, however, from the reivews they appear to be very good. How's the sound in comparison to Halo, Rotel and the like?

Also what interconnects are you guys using between the Preamp and amp?

I own a Rotel and I've heard an Emotiva demo and they sound like...amplifiers. A good amplifier running within it rated capacity should be transparent. Good amps will not impart their own sonic signatures on the signal. By all accounts, the Emotiva are good amps and operate transparently, as they should.

Most of my interconnects are from monoprice.com.

I thought the Emotiva MPS2 amp sounded identical to my Acurus 200X3 amps.
Build quality of the Emotiva amp is outstanding. The XPA-2 should also be top notch quality in sound and build/fit/finish.

I've used Kimber Kable, AudioQuest, Monster Cable, Vampire Wires, Outlaw Audio, and Blue Jeans Cable between my amps and preamps. They all sounded the same. I would recommend Blue Jeans Cable.
