where's the music? SACD MIA

Setup:
Sony DVP CX985V CD/DVD/SACD player
Denon AVR 2805

I've assigned a digital out from the Sony to the Denon and it's working flawlessly... except when it came to play SACD! I dropped in Pink Floyd's Dark Side, selected the SACD layer, the player recognized that it was a SACD (the light came on) and my Denon switched to "analog", it usually plays CDs and DVDs with the DIG input lit up... and no sound came...

Any idea why?

I believe you have to listen to SACD through the analog connections on your player.

Okay, I hooked up the white/red RCA connectors and got some audio out!! My question is though... would this still be the 5.1 surround audio the SACD was mixed in?

If you only used two connections, then no, it's only stereo. If you want to get 5.1 sound, you need to hook up the 6 analog connections on your player to the 6 analog inputs on your receiver. These would be Front L, Front R, Rear L, Rear R, Center, and Sub.

got it

I just found the smallest note on the DVD player manual that says:

"Super Audio CD signals are not output from the digital jack"

IMO, that's a bit retarded, but I guess that settles that!!

I need more cables... Best Buy is making too much money on my trips..

Thanks for your help Jaxvon!!

welcome to the wonderful world of copy protection

You can't get it through the digital connection because you might steal that beautiful high quality signal in the digital domain. You can thank all the music pirates and paranoid music companies for that (if you've ever copied one of your friend's CDs, that means you, ya pirate :) ).

I believe this is one of the reasons SACD and DVD-audio haven't caught on (one of many). People are too confused by the whole digital/analog thing and when they find out they have to buy 6 new cables they ain't happy.

Need more cables ? Bluejeanscables.com Bestbuy, Circuit City, etc.. All of your retail
stores charge list price for their accessories, but people still continue to throw their money away, making these RETAIL outlets richer, and themselves poorer..
