Greetings friends! So help me out here. If I want to download a hi-res version of say Day& Age by The Killers (widely available on several sites) but the band has ever only officially released the CD. Where do these sites/services get their copies of the original lossless masters? I'm mean, I have Blu-rays of Pink Floyd Animals and Jethro Tull Aqualung, and they sound amazing. But they were official/remastered releases, ya know? So are these tracks really uncompressed/taken from the studio masters? I feel like they just tweak them and call them "Hi-Res." Any input would be much appreciated.

Afaik the record company/label generally controls the master and provides such to streaming services, remasters they may not have particular control over without negotiation........

You're onto something. A lot of "Hi-Res" downloads aren't true studio masters. Some sites upscale regular files. It's tricky. Stick to official releases for genuine high-quality sound!
