When Playing Bluray Movie I Loose The Audio

Greetings

I'm new to these forums and this is my first post here. I'm wondering if someone might be able to help me with a problem I'm having. I have a Home Theater System which is composed of a LG 55" TV, a Denon AVR-591 Receiver, a Samsung Bluray Player (BD-DS5700) and Energy Take Classic 5.1 surround speaker system. When I play back certain bluray movies the audio will stop working like halfway or two-thirds of the way through the movie. Two movies that come to mind is John Carter and Oz the Great and Powerful. I think it has something to do with DTS HD MA or at least that what show on my receiver when their playing. I'm hoping someone could tell me if there is some setting I need to change somewhere or what adjustments I might need to make. If I have left out any important info, please let me know and I will try to supply it.

I suppose this system is somewhat modest for many of you, but it works for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried replacing the HDMI cord? Try another Blu-ray player with the Denon 591?

Does this still happen if you play it at low volume It sounds to me that the most likely cause is your Denon going into protection from overload.

I'm guessing the video still works, and it is not simply the result of a dirty or scratched disc.

... It sounds to me that the most likely cause is your Denon going into protection from overload.

Would than not also kill the video? Never had an overload so not sure if it only shuts down the audio and not the video.

I am wondering if this is not an BD authoring issue. Have you checked the BD player's website for what the latest firmware is and check what is in the player.
The remake of Total Recall has audio issues too but haven't heard a receiver shutting down the audio.

I suspect it is the discs. Have they ever worked all the way through? I would suggest trying to start the movie at a scene past where it shuts down to see what happens.

Basically TLS is saying check the speaker wires and make sure the connection is good.

Good question, I don't know since I don't use receivers. However I would think the protection just shuts down the power amps, but I could easily be wrong about that.

This story does not have the feel of a software/HDMI handshake issue. I strongly suspect a hardware fault here.

My guess is that either the DAC in the BD player or the receiver is malfunctioning after a period of use.

I wonder if the OP could tell us if the logo (DTS or whatever) changes wen the audio goes dead.

It would also be nice to know if the analog outputs from the BD player also shut down.

If the analog outs shut down he needs a new BD player, otherwise I think his receiver needs service. I have a feeling he has a faulty receiver.

Are you sure we aren't getting too technical here? I can remember renting videos and having this problem come up once or twice. Sometimes the disc is just faulty. However, if we are talking about more than two discs then the problem is most likely not with the discs themselves. It seems to me if you can remove the faulty disc, put in another disc and have that one play fine, it's most likely a disc problem.

I check quite frequently, there have been no new update for the firmware for at least the last 5 months.

Iwill pay closer attention when this problem happens in the future and note any reading that I see on my receiver. Another bluray movie that I watched recently which was a Redbox my son got was Jack Reacher with Tom Cruise.

Did that BD also shut down the audio? About the same time period from start up as the other failures? If so, then it is not a disc problem as the faults can be anywhere on the disc, different from one disc to another.
Have you tried to play those discs beyond the point where they failed?

Yes, I've restarted the disks and gone back to the point where the audio fails and then continued to play the disk all the way through to the end with no problems.

I've just noticed that Samsung has a new firmare update for the 5700 out as of July 26th. I'm going to do an update later tonight and see if things improve.

A bad disc stops video and audio as it is in the same data stream.

I really doubt a software upgrade will solve a problem like that. I strongly suspect you have a bad BD player or receiver, most likely the receiver, but you will have to continue careful observation to tell which.

Your post is not helpful. Please provide exact details of your problem, with a list of your equipment and how it is connected.

I do not recall us ever having a post with a fault that resembles this before. We need details as this fault is not run of the mill and that makes it hard to give advice at long range.

We need to know if there is commonality of equipment here especially.

I had a Sony receiver, do not remember the model number as I no longer have it that used to drop audio at times, I found that if I switched to a different input and then back to the dvd input, the sound would be back. I also remember a friend having the same issue with a HK receiver. Seemed somewhat common to have picture drop or video drop when receivers first incorporated hdmi.

That Denon AVR 591 is only three years old, and HDMI was over problems by then.

However I see that lower end Denon receivers are among the group known for HDMI board problems. So the likely cause of the OP's problem is a failing HDMI board, however repair will cost more than replacement. Unfortunately lower price range receivers are not known for longevity.
