Whats up with Glass Toslink?

I've always been a coax kinda guy, but the darn new receiver is loaded with Toslink ins and just two coax, so I have been looking at Toslink again. The good news appears that some progress and improvement in general have occured since the horrible first generation Toslink, but whats up with using glass?

Anecdotal statements have been enough to have me asking questions, but not enough to run out and buy anything yet. What I would like to hear is some solid information on the bandwidth, rise time, any jitter effects, what it really does and why.
