What's the best subwoofer for music?

You don't need ULF for music, unless you listen to some rare medieval horror house music. ULF is a non-factor. Distortion means nothing unless its audible. However, size means everything in a small room with very very limited space and placement options.
I disagree.

With that being said, OP should provide some size restrictions.

Rythmik has a couple small subs - L12, F8, etc.
SVS has the SB1000 and SB2000.

Some of these have already been mentioned, and there are several other options available.

The JL certainly isn't the best small subwoofer around.

That's a little over a thousand cubic feet. That's a small, it doesn't take much of a leap of faith to know if he has any furniture or chairs, space and placement options are limited.

Now, I just gave my opinion, its OK if you disagree. I think JL is the best subwoofer for a small room there is, not that its the only good sub.

The JL subs are very good for their size, no doubt, but not their price. If footprint is an issue, the Rythmik F25 is sure to outperform the F113 and has nearly the same footprint and costs half as much. If size isn't as much of a factor and neither is price, Funk produces amazing work, one of the very best where price isn't a factor.

I have compared a $1900 JL E112 against a $800 PSA XS15se in my bedroom and I'll take the XS15se any day. I believe the problem is that the JL audio E112 was eq'ed for flat anechoic response down to about 20Hz. Put that in a small room, adding room gain, and the sound is guaranteed to suck unless you devote money to trying to un-EQ the EQ you paid so much money for. The PSA had too much in that room, but Audyssey could manage it. The JL, plus room gain, was too much for Audyssey alone to manage!
The best fit for the E112, IMHO, is for a larger room where WAF is of paramount importance. it does put out amazing bass for it's small size. While not enough for a large room, it is among the best you can get from a compact box (the Funk being an interesting competitor).

That sub on spec looks like good performer for the money, although they do seem rather large to me.

I love my SVS SB2000. I had an SVS SB1000 until last weekend and upgraded. The difference is VERY noticeable and just right for my room (13.5x19x7.3) and the fact that I use my system for music 95% of the time.

Very compact, passed the WAF test as it's only 1.2" wider & taller, and 1.8" deeper than the one it replaced. It's the one I should have bought in the first place.
