Six month old custom built HTPC as follows:

AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0ghz Quadcore
Gigabyte motherboard
4gig ram (DDR2 6400)
1.5TB harddrive 7200RPM
DVDRW
HDMI
6 USB ports
HTPC case
480watt power supply
E-SATA
VGA and DVI ports onboard
ATI TV tuner card
Windows 7

I know I'm lacking details here, but whattya think? $500 reasonable?

Thanks.

Win 7 (Which version) Ultimate is $199 (I think for OEM)
4GB of RAM is ~$115
1.5TB Drive ~$110
The Phenom is ~$150
Case ??
DVD Drive is ~$30
Mainboard ~$90

It's an okay price... Probably a $750 in parts new.

For used, I would not pay more than 50% of new price.

Just build one yourself.:D

Then you will know what to do or look for when your PC dies.:D

Hell, I was thinking I'd have to buy the parts and then pay someone to build it for me. :D I'm viewing this as "custom built and thoroughly tested" as opposed to "used".

I do see your point, but I am not starting down that road. I already have too many all-consuming hobbies.

Like what?:D

A year ago I've never even opened up a computer case.

Now I can install a PC from scratch in less than 60 minutes.:D

I'm not even in the engineering or computer field of work.

You won't have any kind of warranty on this PC, right?

So if it dies in 30 days, you are just out of luck?

No warranty, but I trust the seller, and he is an IT guy by profession, so I expect the build will be done well and he will help me out if I have any issues.

Definitely taking some risk, but it seems like a much better deal than what I can get from Tiger Direct or wherever, so I think the reward outweighs that risk. Total cost ended up being $375.

While I don't doubt that you can build a PC in an hour, I wonder what that time investment is when you add up all the online research on what parts to buy? ;)

Well, now we're talking - $375.:D

Well, building a PC, like you eluded to, is a hobby.:D

So like all hobbies, of course, it's going to consume time. But if you like it, then it's time well spent.:D

When you can "create" your own computer, you get this feeling of "gratification".:D

It's like, "Yes, I built this thing!":D

But like you said, it's a hobby and it's not for everyone.

But when I think about it, it's amazing how much we all "depend" on computers these days!

And since computers is such a huge part of life, I think building a PC is a hobby well-spent.:D

I prefer a wireless USB keyboard with touchpad, instead of the mouse.

You can get one on eBay for $40.
If you use a front end application like Boxee (its free) then it makes using just the keyboard or just the mouse, or a universal remote super easy.

I preferred a keyboard with a touchpad as well when I had an HTPC....

And then an even cheaper option would be this for $130.....but it isn't shipping till the end of next month I believe.

I have not followed the media server thingies too closely lately, but that one certainly looks like a must have device. The PC I'm buying will not be used as an HTPC, although it was built with that in mind. More of an every day use machine; no gaming. I'll play music off it, but biggest task is photograph and video editing.
