Which receiver would you guys choose a Pioneer SC-1222-K or a Denon AVR X4000?

Personally I would choose the Denon however I have not looked at the Pioneer so I suggest you make a list of what you want out of a receiver, what each receiver provides and then determine which one suits your needs.

I don't believe in spending a huge amount of money an a receiver, $600 max... I would go with the 1222k and spend the other $600 on an xpr3 to power my fronts, or invest it into speakers, or put it in my savings account... I believe the denon is $1200... unless its on sale somewhere?

I'd likely choose the Pioneer, but that's because I prefer their MCACC auto calibration system to the Audyssey system used in the Denon because it accomodates my two different seating positions (MCACC will store multiple configurations, but Audyssey won't).

One is a 9 channel and one is a 7 channel. I think I'd get that figured out before you spend any money. No point in buying amplifiers you won't use. Also understand that one of the things you pay for is multi zone capability. Do you need that? In other words, it seems like you haven't really decided what you need in a receiver. I'd get that out of the way first and then go shopping. I've made the same mistake. The receiver I use goes way beyond what I need and use. I could have saved several hundred dollars and not changed a thing by having a more clear idea of what I really needed. The marketing can be appealing. Make sure you don't make your decisions based on marketing. As to the brands, they are both respected, big name brands that should provide similar satisfaction.
