WHat would cause this?

I was listening to music today on my Yamaha RXV1500, quite loud at 0. And then my left speaker cut out. I turned the volume down, then it cut back in. Is this some kind of protection in the receiver to stop damage to the speaker or was I pushing the receiver too hard or does anyone know what happened?

What speakers are you running? Is the receiver set to flat, or do you have the bass and highs turned up? Sounds like a protection circuit kicking in.

The speakers are 8 ohm and and i have the bass turned down a little and the highs up a little. like -1.5 and +1.5. I wasnt sure if it was the receiver that cut out or the speaker? must have been receiver. must have been bad for it too i bet?? I guess I will keep the volume less then that from now on just be be safe.

I have heard generally that "0" on most receivers is really loud! why would you need it that loud? are you planning on making everyone on your street move?

Yeah its probably louder then it needs to be. I live on a farm so no neighbours!! I dont usually listen to it that loud, usually its somewhere between -15 and -35.

If it was a protective circuit, it should have cut both speakers. It sounds like you might have a loose wire on the left side that got hot and arced. Are there any scorch marks on the speaker or receiver connections ? Is the wire solidly connected ?

I once did the same thing many years ago to some cheap speakers & it was the speaker that gave out..........actually the main driver(they were 2-way speakers). I think I drove them so hard that I separated the voice coil or something. When I turned it back on it played but started making a clacking sound.
