What type of speakers....

I'll be setting up my Denon 4520ci soon and I saw a set up that had bi-polar speakers for the front height speakers. Is that correct? or should I use mono-pole speakers? I have a pair of bi-polar speakers and if the front height speaker placement isn't correct, where can I use them in a 11.2 setup? I will be running front height as well as front wide speakers. Thank you in advance.

Feel free to use the Bi-pole or Di-pole speakers if that is what you wish. Since the days of 7.1 and up these types of speakers have fallen out of favour with the home cinema crowd since they diffuse rather that provide directional cues to the surround steering formats.

They maybe better as per their original use in the Surround or Surround back positions. They likely will not be of benefit in the front LCR placements or in the overheads. The point of the object formats such as Atmos and DTS:X is to steer object sound between the base layers, 7.1/9.1 and the height options, think helicopter or cars moving around in the room.

Thank you but I'm not running dolby atmos
I'll be using Audssey DSX and DTS Neo X and from my understanding the height channels produce atmosphere effect not directional sounds like Atmos and DTS X.

I would stick with bipole or monopole for the front wide speakers.

I cannot say I have heard Audyssey DSX since I own Yamaha however it appears to be a proprietry upmixer similar to DTS Neural X and DSU (Dolby Surround upmixer). The point of the latter two is to create faux object data steering out of older formats for the heights.

If you have Denon or Marantz receiver capable of DTS Neural X then it likely does Atmos, DTS:X and Auro3D Audio as well. If it is an older receiver, pre Atmos/Dts X/Auro then your planned use of Bi-poles is likely fine it will probably not have any impact either way. I would still recommend the original use as surround duties however as you suggest, it may work well enough for the heights. You may wish to reconsider this if an upgrade is in the offing down the line.
