I have the equipment (Pioneer receiver, Polk ~$200 each speakers) for surround sound but have never hooked it up.
This is in a 'small living room' I guess to be around 10x15.
Meanwhile, seeing shiny objects, I picked up a pair of Sonos bookshelf speakers on black Friday with no idea quite how I'd use them except getting the Beam but missed the sale on that.
I just bought the Beam when it went on sale again, but haven't hooked it up, either.
So now the Sonos sub-woofer goes on sale. I could get it, and have probably a nice Sonos setup.
Or, I could hook up the actual stereo and speakers. Which I'd guess will be 'higher audio quality', but I'm not sure how well it would work for my setup and I suspect it would be annoying having the sound from people speaking on the tv coming from another direction from speakers on the sides and back.
And then I find myself looking for a way to justify setting both up. 'Sonos for normal tv, speakers for music and possibly some movies', and think, maybe that's overkill.
I usually see 'worth it' comments for the relatively expensive (on sale for $549) sub-woofer.
Not sure if I'd be needlessly settling for lower sound quality to actually continue the Sonos setup.
Sonos, Receiver, or both...
