Hey everyone, I was wondering what part of my surround system I should upgrade next. I have an Onkyo SR701 reciever, Onkyo HTP-425 5.1 surround sound package (came with reciever) aToshiba 32AF44 TV, and Xbox, and soon an Xbox360. I have a basic DVD player, and I use my system for about 80% gaming, 15% movies, and 5% music. What should I next upgrade. I have about 1200$ budget.

haha ok thanks...im going to upgrade it slowly (spending all my money on front L and R, then center, then Surrounds, and finally sub) so it will prolly be a few years till its down.

edwelly, ill look at those speakers, from what ive seen of them so far they look very nice, but one thing that may be a problem is that (this is just from me looking at them) the surround speakers are dipolar. correct me if im wrong, but dipolar wouldn't be very good for video games because with dipolar you can't tell exactly where they are coming from. This would be very hurtful to me while playing a game like Halo, where i relay on sound just as much as visuals to help locate a enimie. Again, correct me if im wrong on that.

Hello Shadow,

Fronts are the first and most important speakers you could have. Then a Sub, followed by Surrounds, and last but not least the Center Channel. The Center Channel can get created using your fronts. Phanton Center it's called.

And no matter what surrounds you get. You will never hear me coming to kill you in Halo. LOL Mazer

haha is that a challenge? I suppose your gonna crouch walk behind me...hmmm i suppose it might work if its on like super sound absorbant carpet. Im a sniper, and since i spend most my time zoomed in, ive gotten pretty good at hearing when people are trying to sneak up on me.

They sound pretty nice. I spent a few hours listening to them. In all honesty though, because of your receiver, I think you should try to by efficient speakers, such as the aforementioned Acoustechs. As for the surrounds, they're kind of a half-way bipolar design. If you place them only a little behind you, the tweeters will aim towards your ears so the high frequency components of "crunching on ground" sounds will be directed towards you.

.....I'd say surrounds at sitting ear-level minimum....slightly above, if fronts are elevated commensurate with a slightly raised projector screen....rears up high, filling the chamber with heighth and resolved ambience....two front-firing subs, in the front, split, to most cleanly, and effectively, support the soundstage with a full, wide, layer under the soundstage, rendering the cleanest, and most realistically-voiced oscillations to be had....there's what my theater is going to end up with....sounds magnificent to me where I'm at, and I wouldn't care if any of you heatherns came and heard it and didn't like it....because....it tickles me, and I paid fur it.....

.....Shadow, the best advice, I'm going to say, we, can give you, is get the Accoustech speaker package, and find another 100 bucks to get a $300 receiver....you'll have taken a LARGE step, starting off.....

My reciever is about a 800 doller reciever. Onkyo TX-SR701. Its an older model, but still very nice, has all the imports/outports besides (maybe) HDTV.

.....great, you can get the speaker package, and a 200 dollar DVD component that will play CD's....run your TV sound through the receiver also, Shadow, as I'm sure you already do....Brian in Fort Lauderdale is very sharp with a good degree of experience in this hobby......MajorLoser/Dave dropped by Brian's a week ago, and was very impressed with Brian's system of Accoustechs....the same ones you are being pitched....

Well, if your enjoyment is 80% video games and music is only 5%, I am not sure you need to change anything.

I'm not sure if your underestimating the sound that video games use, or if you are right about that. BTW video games now are probably the audio worlds next big consumer. Devolopers have magnificent sound studios set up, and they are planning on using 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 surround sound on the next-generation of gaming. You may want to borrow an xbox n play some halo 2 just to hear it.
