What receiver should I buy.

First off thank you for responding to my thread. Let me say I have a brand new 1080P TV and have no plans to upgrade any time soon so HDMI 2.2 and Dolby Atmos is not worth the extra money for me. As of right now my current receiver is 12 years old (pre-HDMI). It still works great but I would still like to get a new one. To give you an idea of my a/v habits- general TV watching 45%, gaming 30%, movies 20%, and music 5%. I was looking at last years models because well there on sale which is fine by me. the models I was looking at which are on sale in my area are Yamaha (RX-V577 $350.00), (RX-V677 $430.00), and (RX-A840 $700.00) And for Denon (AVR-X3100W $500.00). I know some of them might be overkill but I plan on keeping the new receiver probably 10 years or so if I can. So the price will not be that big of deal on the long term. In case you were wondering what speakers I have they are Polk RTi4 fronts and CSi3 center. They well be getting replaced with Def Tech Studio Monitor 65 fronts, CS-8040HD center, and SR-8040BP surrounds. Once again thank you for responding to my thread, and your input is greatly appreciated.

Given your only specific requirements are that the receiver needs HDMI and can drive your speakers, the cheapest of those receivers will be fine. Yamaha makes great budget receivers.

Spending more will only get more features you aren't interested in, and more watts which won't improve the sound.

Ummm... uh... ok... well... with such clear direction, any of the AVRs you mentioned will be fine. ;)

Sorry, Brenton. Couldn't resist. Seriously, any of those AVRs should be good for you. Not one of them stands out significantly over another.

It's a good deal if you can get the Denon X4000 for that price.

Either way you need to ask yourself if you need the Denon's featureset: 125 watts, 9 speakers, airplay, 4k etc etc. Judging by your original post I'm guessing maybe not.

If I were buying an AVR for my living room, I would get the Denon 4xxx series for Audyssey XT32 Dynamic EQ dual SubHT EQ & MCH amp pre-out.

Agree. I use, and like each of these features.
Brenton, if you haven't bought an AVR in 12 years, you may not be familiar with these features, thus may not realize how useful they are.
Audyssey XT32
Dynamic EQ
Dual SubHT EQ
Multi Channel pre-outs
When I started seriously moving into HT, I didn't understand the value of these. But I listened to recommendations on this site and got the X4000. As I played with it, the value of these capabilities became apparent, and I now use them all.

If you're looking for a long-time AVR, I suggest you don't limit yourself to only the features with which you're familiar from 12 years ago. Get the X4000, and as the spirit moves you, learn about and experiment w/ all its capabilities. I think you'll be happy.

I think you will be blown away! Lots to learn and hours of experimenting w/ various settings to see what you like the best, (if you're so inclined). Don't hesitate to come back here w/ questions.

One more piece of advice... start thinking about a sub, or even better, subs. That will head and shoulders make the biggest difference of anything else you can do now. Until you have heard a system w/ good subs, you can't imagine how much difference they make. And I urge you to use the same wisdom you showed coming here BEFORE you bought the receiver. There are some really outstanding subs you have likely never heard of, (internet-direct only... not sold in stores).

Good on you, and have fun!!!
