what kind of speaker wire to use?

newbie question. lol what kind of speaker wire to use?

rear speakers gonna need about 30 feet of speaker wire.


so what kind of speaker wire is recommedned for a home theatre system? is 1 brand better than another? what about shielded speaker wire? would like to be enlightened, and some choice of speaker wire to use.

Hi, Steve. I'm of the belief that wire is wire, so I don't favor any particular brand. I do think that Monoprice.com offers good wire at good prices, but you can get good wire at a lot of places.

In terms of which gauge to go with, I find the site linked here to have an excellent summary table to help you choose. The recommendations are in terms of how long the wires will be and the nominal impedance of your speakers.

As Adam said, wire-is-wire and any brand will work. Monoprice .com or bluejeans.com are very good or you can buy speaker wire at Radio Shack or Best Buy. In your case I would get 14 gauge. You can get larger wire ( 10 or 12 gauge; smaller number is larger wire) but you really don't need it.

Shielding is not really needed and will provide only minimal benefit, if any.

Remember...

Higher frequencies tend to migrate to the outside of a wire (path of least resistance) so mutli-strand OFC (oxygen free copper) is best. Using the chart someone else posted a link to is a great idea for determining gauge.

The connections need to be as important as the wire so make sure they are well secured.
