i noticed both polks monitor 50s and the monitor 40s have the same -3dB point at like 57hz but the overall response rating for the monitors is 47hz the 50s, 42. im not really sure why this is, maybe due to the roll off slope?

The larger the cabinet, the deeper they can go. The specifications themselves are confusing, and don't really tell you anything about the speaker.

Overall Frequency Response 47Hz - 25kHz
Lower -3dB Limit 57Hz
Upper -3dB Limit 24kHz

All it's saying is that its -3db at 57hz and 24khz, but in between it could be +-15db. Highly unlikely, but the specs are misleading anyways.

Yes. With the additional drivers, one has a lower natural roll off than the other.

What is "overall frequency response"?

It is worthless.

It tells you nothing.

The only frequeny response you want know is the on-axis and off-axis +/-3dB frequency response.

+1, everything else is marketing hype.

that's what i figured, but surely the monitor 50 can go deeper because of the larger cabinet then then monitor 40 right? i mean its like a 2.5x increase in cabinet volume.

Monitor 40
Overall Frequency Response 47Hz - 25kHz
Lower -3dB Limit 57Hz
Upper -3dB Limit 24kHz

Monitor 50
Overall Frequency Response 42Hz - 25kHz
Lower -3dB Limit 57Hz
Upper -3dB Limit 24kHz

The 50 can go lower, it's just at more than -3dB. These specs are absolutely useless lol.

Yes, it is due to the roll off slope. Unfortunately, if they don't tell you how far down the "overall" rating is (is it -6dB? -12dB? it could be anything), it is of little practical use in comparing with other brands.

However, if you listened to them, I would be surprised if the bass subjectively sounded the same, and would expect that there would be some improvement with the Monitor 50 speakers.
