What is the Home Theater Experience?

You’re at the edge of your seat while Indy is exploring an unknown cave loaded with mystery and danger when suddenly your spine rattles from the thunderous bass of a nearby boulder rolling down the walkway heading directly towards you. You’re holding onto the armrest for dear life as you maneuver around the catacombs, just barely dodging the poisonous spears to the left and right of you. You find the hidden treasure and rescue the girl just in time and as the credits role, you slowly come back to reality and exit the theater in awe and disbelief. For a brief moment in time, you were transported away from your daily routine looking though the eyes of a hero and helping him brave through his challenges.

I'm in the middle of your 5 step procedure but it's for my sister in OK. She actually believes that I have good info and has let me pick the equipment. She has also agreed to let me reconfigure a room to best accommodate audio and video. I get to put it all together at Christmas time. Her room even has a gentle slope to the ceiling and it is enclosed. It should prove to be the best sounding room that I have heard to date. That's not saying much but still, it will be a personal high point.

I'm going to wait until she sees and hears what she has before I spring the idea of room treatments on her.

Great article. It's nice to know that I'm doing this right.

Not a lot of comments but I liked the article.

I guess it hit closer to home for me and my wife.

The last movie theater we visted played a VERY bad rendition of King Kong.

The screen was filthy, the theater was filthy, the sound system seemed to be missing everything under 50Hz, the projector wobbled, the film was worn out and exibited the usual black lines on either side and specks of light throughout the film. Had I not been with my wife, I would have left.

Once you know what audio and video quality REALLY is, there is no going back!!!

Long live NetFlix!!!!!

Actually, I can do that in 30 seconds or so.
I just pause the disc right before the THX ball... sit my dad in the right listening area and hit play. Now mind you, it's loud enough that the lightning sounds like real lightning. I saw him physically jump out of my seat :D :D :D

That's experience... but he's still stuck on a old old JVC HTIB. :(

Nice article - that's basically the reasons I got into the home theater "hobby" in the first place. Now I rarely go to a theater - unless it's a movie that I just can't wait for the DVD release to watch - and then I'm usually disappointed by the projection and sound quality. An exception is the local Harkins Cine Capri with its 70ft screen and 40,000 watts of sound - The Hulk was impressive in that theater. ;)
