:) You should burn a CD consisting of your favorite quality recordings, and try to audition a pair at a local dealer. Bring a notebook along and write your notes. Then listen to other speakers with the same CD. Remember they won't necessarily be the speakers that "grab your immediate attention" but they'll be very true to the recording. try to audition for a good 2 hours or so if possible, so don't be afraid of setting up an appointment beforehand.

Remember that while bass response is important, it's greatly dominated by the audition room so it won't necessarily sound the same in the audition to how it will sound in your room. Try to bring a variety of music that will push the speaker in different ways.

I don't expect those will even come close to the level of sound quality you would be getting from any of the following speakers in the general 2-3K range

Audio Artistry CBT36
Philharmonic Audio 2
JBL LSR6332
Pioneer S1-EX
Salk Supercharged Songtower
KEF R900
Ascend Sierra Tower / Raal
The Pioneer S1-EX is available that cheaply somewhere? Wow!

Could you send me a PM letting me know where? I want first dibs. :)

The pros of the Q900

- Larger coaxial means it probably has better pattern control.
- Less expensive with a lot of smart cost-cutting maneuvres
- Excellent coaxial driver

The cons of the Q900
- There is some cone breakup that may be offensive in the treble.
- It's kind of ugly
- It's a 2.5 way design, so the coaxial has to play the entire range of sound. In the 3-way R900, the coaxial is freed from playing the bass range. At higher SPLs that means the R900 could be more under control, as the midrange driver does not have to do bass at the same time, and the waveguide on the tweeter does not have to do bass at the same time. The R900 also has two 8" woofers handling the bass, whereas the Q900 does not (don't confuse the passive radiators with woofers)

Overall, try to listen to both. I know I'd feel more comfortable with the R900 but if to your eyes and ears the difference in cost is not justified, then that's fine too.

Never heard about Thunder and Blue. Vast majority of Cerwin and Sony are way below par.

To be honest Monitor Audio imo is overpriced and not that great. I heard bronze and silvers and did not like them at all. YMMV
Klipsch speakers are bright - it's a love or hate design - some people find them fatiguing for longer listening periods.

Focal, TANNOY and Dali are brands you should concentrate your auditions. Burn a cd with your favorite tracks.

Check out Audiolics articles on how to listed to speakers.
