I'm just trying to determine what is the best subwoofer for a specific price point.

So, that many people with all sort of budget can benefit from.

1. I'll start by what I believe to be the best performing and value sub in the $1,200 price range.
I could be wrong, so be nice now. ;)
* I'll say the New SVS PB12-Plus that sells for $1,139.

2. And for half of that, in the $600 price range, I'll say the SVS PB12-NSD, that sells for $569.

You guys' turn now.

This thread is bound to turn into a mess. Every sub at its respective price point has its strengths and weaknesses, it's all application dependent. Compare a JL Audio f110 to a Elemental Designs P7-650. The cost is the same for both, but look at the differences. At their respective tasks they are vastly superior than the other. I'd love to own either, but when I had that kind of money to blow on subs, I bought the ULS 15 dual drive, which costs roughly the same, but for my specific purposes, it was the better choice. The seaton submersive also costs about the same, and it is also suited for a somewhat different situation. None of these subs are better than each other, they are all just suited for different circumstances.

Best sub!!

Hands down the best subwoofers on the market are the JL AUDIO period!!

y can get a new/or like new JL AUDIO F_!!# for around $2000.

Even the JL f-110 is excellent.

I promise you won't regret buying a JL AUDIO subwoofer!!

If this thread develops into a mess, then be it, that's what it's all about isn't?

With all the expert members here at Audioholics, we'll plunge into that mess, and we'll extrapolate it, unmess it, go up and down (low bass anyone) with it, breaking new barriers, unlimited, intransigeant of our coordinates, invincible of our convictions, with proofs to show for, with graphs, calculations, analysis, REW, elaborate measurements, total output, in decibels, in hertz, in extreme extension, in low distortion, we'll emerge victorious of our discoveries and tribulations, we'll all suffer together, we'll swerve into another dimension, we'll intercept new galaxies, we'll smoke all the same herb, we'll spin our heads into new territories, we'll suffocate till we'll implode, we'll subatomically disperse into the four corners of the globe, we'll crucifiate the non-believers, we'll induce new horizons, we'll unfold the mysteries behind subsatan, we'll uphold the unwarrantable, we'll justify the unjustifiable, we'll pulverise the matadors of evil, we'll unleash hell into the brains of the unpurifiable, we'll unfasten our seat belts, we'll deregulate the irregularities, we'll unrepentantly absorb the inabsorbable, we'll unfade any prejudices, any misconceptions or false pretenses, we'll irradicate the irrational, we'll insurge our own defensive,
we'll chastise the hypocrites by stabilizing the instability, inseminate the goddess of persuasion; anyway we'll get through it. I ain't worry for a cent about it. We'll eat subs for cereal in the morning. And we'll sleep tight and firm at night in our peaceful dreams.

What more do you need?

At any price point starting at $500 and over, the best subwoofer for ANY price is always going to be a properly designed DIY unit. :D Now, while I can not speak for others, I can design a unit that will out perform, measurably, any thing commercial at the same price point. Due to the huge profit margin required by the commercial distributors, I can fit much higher quality/higher performance parts into the same budget. For example: no sub manufacturer with pre-fabbed units in the world uses a driver equivalent to the Audiopulse LMS Ultra units. Yet you can get a 12" LMS for about $500 from the right sources. Right here, you have the best 12" driver, performance wise, in the world - seriously uncontested so far. So take the price of a JL F112 12" commercial unit. For this price, I can use the LMS Ultra, build a top notch cabinet, integrate a high power amp and add a powerful DSP hardware(DCX2496) to the mix and come out at the same price or slightly less. As superb as the W7 drivers may be, they can't compare to LMS Ultra drivers (nothing can so far) in terms of excursion vs. motor strength vs. distortion byproducts. And this is the deciding factor for a sealed cabinet subwoofer such as the JL units.

Seriously I'm with shadyJ. The space and the application will determine whats best. Things have changed a lot in the last two years and there are a lot of good drivers and commercial subs out there now.

Hey Chris, ever thought of having your own business? Or do you actually take orders?
Thought of..... sure.... but I'm terrible at business and last year I started taking some orders(these are all main speakers; not subs).

So far... 1st order delivered... 2nd order nearly complete but buyer can't take delivery due to forced moving to another country (matt34) and the 3rd order.... and the most extensive one by far.. is not complete... behind schedule and the buyer upset due to the long wait (which I totally understand).

I don't have appropriate work area to produce anything with any hint of 'efficiency'. My designs are far more extensive than anything you would normally purchase - so it takes a bit of work to fabricate the cabinets.

I will consider future custom orders... but... I am going to limit this to design/engineering/testing , etc.. That is, you want a special speaker system and I'll design it and have a local shop to me build the majority of it - and I'll do minor assembly and program the crossover, etc. and deliver it to you. I am not going to commit to building anything myself in the future. I may do some cabinet modification(not nearly as extensive as say Matt's cabinets) for some select people, but that's it so far as my hands on work in the shop.

I even have a pretty advanced stage design of a speaker that was intended for production (a very special speaker: low cost and performance/features virtually unheard of... it would give regular people the chance to experience reference grade speakers), but my partner (that was to handle all business, secure investor, etc.) ended up with some serious personal problems that forced him to abandon the project.I never finished/completed the design, however, as funding never appeared. :( I can't explain it in any detail on a forum, as it's still a great concept and maybe one day I'll get a chance to use it.

Thanks Chris for your openness and honesty. You have great knowledge, perhaps the most knowledgeable here in these Forums, and you also seem to be a talented person. That's too bad that your projects never materialise the way you would have like to. I can't relate to that myself.
But I still have the feeling that you're a happy man, besides your frustrations and less than successful realisations.
You pretty much put the final touch in this thread that hardly took foot.
You're the man, and I cannot deny that. The guy that knows about the best value and performance on DIY subs.
This is your thread now, your domain, your speciality, I'm relaying it to you, the true maestro.
Me, I'm just a fool of words. There's no sub in me.

Regards,

Bob
