I am trying to find what if any functionality i would lose if i went with a ps3 over a stand alone player. Im either going with a Panny blu ray or a ps3.
I am a gamer but there really arent many games that appeal to me on ps3. My 360 is my console of choice.

Do you mean for movie watching what will you give up? Nothing. The PS3 is still up there with the best and most feature packed blu-ray players on the market. If you are using a universal remote to control your system, you will have an added cost for an IR to Bluetooth adapter for the PS3 or you will have an extra remote (or use a controller).

Basically im asking if it would have all the same settings and options as a stand alone player as far as video and audio? I will be connecting to a Denon 2310ci via HDMI

Yes, it should have all the settings you'll need.

As long as you don't need your player to have analog outputs, the PS3 will do everything you need it to, and if you have a wired or wireless ethernet connection, firmware updates are easy. The upscaling on the PS3 is very good, and it loads discs just as fast or faster than any standalone player. Now that the new 160 and 320 gig PS3's have been annouonced, you may be able to find a 250 gig for $299 if you are lucky.

You will lose nothing when connecting via HDMI, but as Glocks has pointed if you need analog outputs then it wouldn't be the way to go. There are a few things that the PS3 has over a stand alone player.

1) Frequent Firmware updates

2) Can be used as a media center

3) 3D compatibility for gaming at this moment and movies should happen by the end of this year, if it's something you look forward to.

4) Large HDD and replaceable, if you wish to store music or digital copies of movies.

They really keep up on the updates, you really wouldn't lose anything. You might actually be gaining by going to it.
