you would hate more for you to use them cables in the manner you are now and it still sounding like poo! I guess either way you are at a loss with the cables so you might as well make the best of the situation and run stereo subs!

As for using a splitter... Would this really be an okay solution? Does anyone else have an opinion on that idea?

If it is any consolation, I have used one on 2x $1K subs.
Worked like a charm, as a matter of fact majorloser had heard them, when they were hooked up.
And he had no complaints.

Yes. Of course, following my full instructions later on will always result in even better sound quality.
