What do you think about this statement?

I was on AudioAdvice website and came across this statement.

"In setting up a 5.1 system, try fooling the processor by adding 2 feet to the center channel measurement. This could create a greater sense of space"

What do you think?

I would never have thought of that. What would it hurt to try though? It's easy enough to go back to normal if you don't like it..

Adding 2 feet to the center channel distance measurement will make the center out of phase with the mains. Also, the processor may increase the channel trim to compensate for greater distance. The audible effect may be pleasing to some, but by doing this your setup is no longer calibrated.

A greater sense of space comes by adding more space. The room itself should be calibrated against a baseline measurement where every speaker hits the primary listening point at exactly the same time. This way, when audio effects that the receiver outputs is utilized it can properly put them in place. 'Concert Hall' is one of those ways receivers often can convey greater space to listeners, but you don't want to 'fool' the receiver to accomplish it.

Set things up correctly to begin with, then utilize the receiver as it was designed for. That'll give you the most performance you could really ask for at any price point for a receiver.
