What Do You Need To Get All You Can Get From Your AV AMP???

I know I need a Hi Def TV to view Hi Def. But what do I need to hear what my amp (Denon AVR-2808CI) boast of? Do I need a DTS, Dolby True HD, DTS HD, etc., etc., DVD player or will any DVD player do? In other words, is the process encoded in the DVD disk and able to traval through regular stereo tracks and once it hits the AV Amp and reaches it's decoders, is it then decoded? Or is some other preparation process necessary of the DVD player itself before it can be properly transferred to the AV Amp and then through it's decoders. While I'm at it; "are the decoders even in the amp?"

And how do all of these things apply to a CD, in other words can a CD produce surround sound? I know a lot about electronics but very little about this new HD, DTS, Dolby True, etc., etc., etc. All I know is I heard it, and I liked it a LOT!

I got the amp, I got the speakers and the HDTV is on the way, how much more money will I have to spend?

I'm not totally sure what you are asking, but here goes.

1) your receiver can decode Dolby Digital and DTS from a regular DVD player

2) You need a blu-ray or HD-DVD player to get True HD or DTS HD.

3) I doubt your receiver can decode the Hi-rez DVD's audio. Check your manual for that. If it does, you can run it through a HDMI cable to your receiver and you're jake.

4) If your receiver can't do what's in # 2, you should be able to run six analog interconnects from your hi-res DVD player to analog inputs on your Denon and you're jake.

5) Regular CD's don't do multi-channel. For this you need SACD and/or DVD-Audio players, and discs recorded in those formats. Even then, not all SACS/DVD-A discs are multi channel. Many are stereo..

6) I strongly doubt your receiver can decode the multi-channel info in #5. This decoding must be done in the players themselves. You'll need another 6 analog cables to accomplish this.

7) The rub may be that all receivers I've seen only support one set of analog inputs but I learn new things every day.

Again, verify what I've said with your manual and others.
