What can beat the Onkyo TX-SR606

I've been looking at the Onkyo TX-SR606 and have read some very positive reviews. I'm wondering if there is a better or cheaper receiver out there that will satisfy my needs.

Those needs are
  1. HDMI 1.3 audio and video. 1 output, at least 3 inputs
  2. 2x Optical input
  3. 5.1 is ok
  4. upscaling to at least 720p on the HDMI output
  5. BONUS: iPod in

Like I said, the Onkyo TX-SR606 seems like a perfect match, but is there anything cheaper or a better buy? (It's going for just under $400 on amazon.)

Thanks.

The Yamaha RX-V663 only has two HDMI inputs, according to productwiki dot com.

While I could get by with 2 HDMI inputs, if for the same price I can get just about the same thing with 4 inputs, I would lean towards the Onkyo. However, the yamaha pre-outs are also worth considering. But I have a feeling I would use another HDMI in before I would utilize pre-outs.

hdmi switches are inexpensive, so you can add one to the RX-V663 and have all the HDMI ports you need.

Does the Yamaha have 1080 Upscaling?

It does Upconversion, but I don't see where it does Upscaling.

It has 2 HDMI Inputs, has TrueHD & DTS-MA decoding.

The Onkyo 606 has 4 HDMI Inputs, Upscales to 1080i, and has TrueHD & DTS-HD decoding.

It seems like the Onkyo 606 is pretty hard to beat.

Had no idea this receiver was even out...and I was just about to post a thread asking what else can we expect on the ~$500 AVR horizon? :D

Does anyone know what model Denon the reviewer in the ultimateavmag is referring to in his conclusions of the 663?

Ouch. That is a really bad review for the Yamaha. But it is not a surprise; Onkyo has been making clearly better receivers than Yamaha at the same price point. IMO
WoW, clearly? in what manner? would you share your opinion?

edit: by the time the onks hit the shelves and gets rolling, yama will release a new model, and i see no preouts yet.....

Well, my opinion is base on the reviews I see. Every review I see the onkyos have benchmark performance in the preamp section and amp section. Also the price is very competitive, with similar or more features (except as you mention the pre-outs of the 606) But if you see the reviews the onkyos can give you around double the power when all channels drivers, is this matters?, well that's a reason two get a external amplifiers to get more power, right? Also I just trying to be objective, is difficult to see a review when a product is not recommended, and I can tell that review is not exactly good, the reviewer talks about distortion at high volume, and not very good YPAO . I don't think the yamaha is a poor performance, if fact I believe there a are little difference between receivers at the same price,(I didn’t made the review, I just read it and made the comment) but what I believe is, that each manufacture has a good time (when they products performs a little better or have advantage over receivers of another manufactures at similar price points), and this 2 last years has been Onkyos best in many time, just like was Denons with the 3805 for example. At the end what matters is that there it still useful reviews that help see what the best products for the price are at any given time. The reviewers has the advanteage to do comparative reviews (between products) in similar listening condition with objective measurements, so that is why they are useful to read if someone is looking for and advice and can’t do a similar comparison. But the way, my receiver is Yamaha and I happy with it.

The Yamaha 663 comes highly recommended here. I have one on the way!

If you are willing to go with the SR605, you can get factory refurbished units for under $300, and the SR705 for just over $400, and the SR805 for mid $500s. If you can't find the place in Google search, you can PM me.

Yes but Onkyo's have been having a lot of QC issues. The 605 has popping in the processor and would run extremely hot. I believe they fixed the popping with 606 but it still runs extremely hot. I don't care what anyone says, extreme heat for prolonged periods of time is bad for any piece of electronics.

True, but "extreme heat" equates to different temperatures for different electronics. ;) I'm guessing that Onkyo predicted the MTBF for their units and considered it sufficiently long to meet commercial needs and not present a significant risk of negative implications on their business. Just a hunch.

Don't get me wrong, though. I felt an 805 at Circuit City and thought that it was WAY too hot. I consider it more about inefficiency than lifespan, though. They are converting an awful lot of energy into waste heat, and living in Tucson...I don't need more of that than necessary.

What I like about reviews like those is that the reviewers did a fairly detailed jobs explaining the plus and minus of each receiver. Notice that the heat issue was mentioned in the 606 review, and even though the reviewer liked that receiver, he wouldn't buy it because it lacks features he needed such as switched outlets.

As I said before, it's better to hear from people who listened to comparable receivers than to follow popular suggestions on products everyone have heard about but few have actually heard.

I find this quite interesting. I at one time ordered an Onkyo 705, but returned it because it was getting way too hot. This happened even when I did not push it very hard. The sad part was, I only was powering my RTi6's. Once I returned the 705, I decided to get the Yammie 663. So far I have been very happy with my decision. One thing, it doesn't overheat but at times does get warm to the touch. Not implying Yamaha is better, but I am convinced something surely was wrong with the 705.

Cheers,

Phil

I recently bought an Onkyo 605 and it came defective, at the moment I am in the process of getting my money back (they dont have any in stock to exchange). I am faced with a similar question where I can't decide between upgrading to another Onkyo (606 or 705) or the Yamaha 663. As I never had a chance to use my 605 I have little experience with the sound quality, though the stories I am hearing about the intense heat bothers me. Does the 663 run significantly cooler? Also, are there any features I would be looking at "downgrading from" if I bought the Yamaha over another 605/606 or a 705?
