What are your top 5?

I was just wondering what you audiophiles consider to be your top 5 "go to" movies are for your home theater. Movies you enjoy and ones that you like to use to show off your set up! I'm looking for some new blu-rays to grow my collection (currently have 4 lol), and want to know which ones would be a good investment for surround sound.

I checked out the movies with bass thread, but a lot of the posts are a bit dated and I didn't know if some better movies have surfaced since..

As long as your dated movies were remastered in the late 90's, early 00's, they are probably better than anything that has come out recently. Thats more an observation on actual content of the film than of the sound quality, but whatever. You know what you like, just make sure you have the best available version of it!

I haven't watched a whole lot of movies, but I like these for sound:

Transformers - just a fun ride, IMO.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith - the scene in the desert has some awesome bass.

Yeah, transformers is supposed to be pretty sweet. Got 1 and 2 a while back.

should pick up mr/mrs smith as I've heard it brought up in many conversations referring to the the loud explosions..

huh, why can't I edit my OP? Anyways, I have Transformers 1 & 2, King-Fu Panda, Thor, and picked up the Dark Knight today.

The Dark Night opens with the bank robbery scene. I can think of no better movie to show of my system with.

Master and Commander. There are times in this movie when the LFE scares me.

Caino Royale - A wonderful test for picture quality with a very nice soundtrack.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Beautiful music combined with my favorite genre.

Thor- A movie I just got and the LFE is wonderful as expected.

I disagree. You only remember the good films from this era. There were plenty of terrible movies in every generation. The good ones last. Making a great movie is a hard as making a good song. Most are not very good, but sometimes you hit a home run.

Transformer 3 is really something in the surround tracks;):D
Also saw a video interview of the sound engineer and was surprised to learn that the director didn't know what 7.1 surround is.

I may need to get that Smith video and watch when the partner is not here. She didn't like it:(

I've heard this called "The Roman Ruins Effect" (I'll be damned if I can figure out where...maybe I'm getting the name a little wrong). We think the Romans must have been great architects, because their structures are still standing today...but, of course, all of the bajillions of crappy rickety buildings they built fell down long ago.

Well, they did have great architects - outstanding ones. They almost surely also had a number of not-so-good ones. That said, even great architects can intentionally make buildings that won't last for thousands of years. For example, there's no good reason for my home to last until the year 4000, but a hundred years would be nice. :) And, if our civilization were to crumble and no one lived here, the lack of maintenance would cause it to deteriorate even faster.

If you haven't seen them - I think that they are both excellent movies.

Just remember - DVDs have great audio! :) The video might not be as crisp as blu-ray, but you can get a real kick out of that sound!
