what amp?

hey i have a pair of speakers which i picked up for dirt cheap off gumtree. on the panel on the back it says "inputs 8 ohms 250 watts (max)"

what sort of amp do i need to power these speakers?

Any amp that will deliver up to 250w unclipped. That is a maximum rating not RMS power required. If you intend to use them in 2ch (stereo) then I'd look at a integrated amp or a stereo receiver.
