I think Vizio panels are Korean (LG) made with lots of Taiwan parts. Or at least a Taiwan based company owns a large portion of Vizio.

I must warn you though, many people have issues with life span on Vizio products. They generally die in a year or two. They also tend to have terrible artifacting on high-motion pictures.

And I must also add, whales? I seriously am boggled by this. I could understand choosing a greener company (benefits the world in general), a country that supports workers (not china?), but whales are just so randomly un-related to a TV that I have a hard time taking this as anything but a joke.

Edit: As a side note, most of the TVs you are boycotting (Sony) actually have their panels made in China.

Vizio is an American company started by a Taiwanese native. They get 85%+ of their products from AmTran (http://www.amtran.com.tw/), a Taiwanese company who also owns about 20-25% of Vizio.

As far as I know, AmTran does not build their own LCD panels. I believe Samsung, Sharp, Phillips, and Sony have pretty much a stranglehold on that operation in one capacity or another.

Effectively what these companies (Vizio, Olevia, Westinghouse) do is buy the overstock or b-stock equipment from everyone else and slap their own cases on the stuff.

Seriously, I have no life.
I suppose my position would seem ridiculous to someone with no social conscience and who is only myopically concerned with what affects themselves.

Frankly, I wear the ridicule of such a person as a badge of honor.

Thanks to those who recommended Vizio. I actually walked by a few Vizio sets this morning and really admired their aesthetics. I'm definitely going to research their products. AFAIK, *China is not involved in whaling so it's okay with me if Vizio's product is manufactured there.

(*Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.)
They may not be involved in whaling but their human rights record is awful. They also don't recognize intellectual property rights.

You would rather buy products from a country that doesn't engage in whaling but has enacted policies of genocide, political/ethnic cleansing and called the rounding up of teachers, professors and artists who didn't fall in line with the Communist regime their period of "Enlightenment"? Really? I mean, it's your choice and you have every right to pursue this, although I think a general boycott of the countries in question may get better results.

Harvesting animals to extinction is a really bad/stupid practice but I'm not sure this is the best/most efficient way to get the message across. The countries whose products you're boycotting will probably never see anything about this and they just don't care if you won't buy electronics from their country.

Oh yeah, I do do the social conscience thing in my own way. I don't shop at Wally World because they don't sell US goods anymore. I bought an Oppo blue ray player because it kicked ***...I mean it's a US built player that does use foreign content. I generally do not drink bottled water unless I'm traveling or one of the kids is screaming about being thirsty.

I turn lights off in the house and won't turn them on late at night - which also means I have ripped off the toe nail from my big toe three times due to impacts with furniture in the dark. Man does that freak the wife out!! Doesn't hurt that much anymore, just bleeds a lot.

I think it's good to have some social conscience and do what you can. But sometimes we do have to be realistic about what we can do because of the global realities unless we are willing to cut ourselves off completely and buy no TV or other electronics at all. I applaud your enthusiam. Do some research and decide how much you can accept.
I thought lights were made so we don't need to stumble around in the dark. I think a better way to avoid damage to the piggies would be to not use too much lighting when it's not so dark or to use more efficient bulbs.

Just guess where Oppo's parent company is based;)
