Well that's just cool

Tonight is my last night on leave before I fly back to base, so I went to dinner with my parents at the local Macaroni Grill. I have everything packed since I have an early flight tomorrow, so I wore my dress uniform. So we eat our dinner and when we go to pay the bill, my meal isn't on there. I asked the waitress about it (she hadn't said anything about it) and she told me that one of the other patrons had paid for mine anonymously.

Nobody came up and said anything about it to me, and when I looked around, nobody seemed any more suspect than their fellow diners. I've had people buy me drinks and such, but they are always right there talking to me. That's the first time it's ever been completely anonymous. Anyway, I just wanted to share, I thought that was really awesome. And thanks to the person(s) who paid for it, whoever you are! :)

That's awesome. I'm glad that people are differentiating between the soldiers and the war. I know for a fact my dad didn't get the same treatment when he was drafted into the Army during Vietnam, and he didn't even have a choice!

Luckily I'm not out there in the front lines. However, if I do screw up at my job, nobody will be around to yell at me, that's for sure. :D

That's awsome! Me and some of the guys here at the office like to do that. It started out just a spur of the moment thing, but I made it sort of official and started a program called "A Hero"s Lunch." Whenever any of us are out at lunch and there are service people, whether it's a Burger King, Chili's, or even the finer places like Antonio's, we anonymously pick up the tab. We even take donations now and have about 15 people invollved in our group. It's a lot fun and it's just a very small way to tell someone who serves that they're special and are thought of. Often times you don't get to see their reaction, but if they're nearby, it's always a great feeling to see that look of surprise and a proudful smile. Good Stuff! I love it.

Amen to that.

When I went to college after I got out of the Air Force in the early 70's a girl spit in my face and called me a baby killer when she heard I was a veteran. ...and I didn't even go to Vietnam!

+1 on the thanks and praise CHP... be safe out there.

Funny story that's somewhat relevant. I travel quite a bit for work, and one time a while back the flight I was on had a small group of soldiers who were returning from a tour in Iraq. Well, the flight was about 3 hours long, and during that time I'd say about half the other passengers kept ordering drinks for the soldiers - a very nice gesture indeed, but these guys were downright sloshed by the time we landed! It was great and a well deserved treat for them to say the least; prior to pulling into the gate, the captain stopped the plane and asked us all to allow these guys to de-board first, and thanked them for their service. Everyone applauded and cheered, as the soldiers stumbled to the front of the plane, drunk but happy. I love witnessing things like this and taking part in them, it restores my faith in the underlying patriotism of the common American and shows we're not all out there looking down our noses with spite at these true modern heroes. :)
