Well, it’s back to the 70’s for me.

I’ve been lusting for some fitting bookshelves to mate with my Marantz 2270 in the man-cave for a while now. The Wharfedale 40’s can’t take the juice and the L-55s are too big. Both are temporarily retired for the time being, plus one of the 55s needs a new surround. I’ve been using a pair of Sound Dynamics RTS-3s. Now, these are quite nice and do a remarkable job on all types of music. They provide a well-balanced, polite, accurate rendition and, as Martha Stewart would say “That’s a good thing.”

Being a child of the 60’s, and remembering what those days were like, something primal was missing on rock music. And, I simply wanted something that “fit” the Marantz. Maybe it’s middle age crazy, mid life crisis or simply “wanting” something I couldn’t have back then or whatever. I didn’t care. I just wanted something. I didn’t know exactly what, but I wanted it.

I kept this idea on the back burner for some time now and I stumbled across a pair of JBL L-26 Decades for sale. I remembered these from when they first came out and was quite impressed but at that time, finances were dedicated to more basic needs, like food, rent, car, etc… Now, thirty some odd years later I find these for sale and at a doable price. Eureka! These were just what I’ve been (inactively) searching for.

So, I pay my money and anxiously wait for these things to show up at the door. When they finally arrived I was like a little kid at Christmas. I tore open those boxes open as quickly as I could. They were packed in what wound up filling 7 large garbage bags of peanuts and another of bubble wrap. When the wife came home I was knee-deep in peanuts.

When I finally hook ‘em up the difference in sound is striking. I was tuned to a classical station (my tastes have expanded in the passing of time) and I was initially disappointed. They had that west coast mid range peak that didn’t sound “right”. I was wondering if I hadn’t been too lost in recreating the past to keep a realistic mind about these things. I flipped the FM dial and was getting used to the sound. Still, initially, I was not overly impressed.

But, when I dropped in SRV’s Texas Flood, it all came to life. Now THIS is what these were made for. After a few days I acclimated myself to their sound on other types of music I listen to and I no longer find them objectionable. Actually, I find I prefer this type of sound in the man-cave.

So, I guess you CAN go home again

That sounds great! I must say, sometimes those nonlinearities sound damng good. And besides, in this hobby, it's all about what sounds good to you. Enjoy the man cave!

I have two pairs of grilles, brown and blue, for my Lancer 55s, which were released the same year ('73). I thank G-d that aren't orange. It wouldn't have been a deal breaker, but... On second thought, mebbe orange would have been been cool in a 70's kind of retro way after all.

Actually, I think like these better than the 55s. They are better balanced. The 55s are somewhat of a thunder lizard. What, a 2' tall, 2 way floor stander with a 14'" woofer and all. ...Killer bass, though.

Yep, I do remember the paragon and it's little brother. Impressive, but for a floor standing system of that era I prefer the larger single channel (JBL) systems from that era, like the Olympus, Apollo, Soverign, etc...

My Pa' has the Pioneer HPM-100's (clone of the JBL L100 Century speakers) and they sound awesome. Excellent bass, good mids and highs. AND they are fully adjustable. You can turn the mids and highs off and just use the bass driver if you like.

I will get a picture up when I clean them up a bit.

My first pair of "serious" speakers were Infinity 2000AXTs from '76. Powered by a Sansui AU-9500 Integrated amp, I probably killed off a lot of brain and eardrum cells. Worth it, though.

Now go to Ebay and find yourself a '71 Plymouth Duster (with the 340 small block). You'll be all set for your 30 year reunion.

Aw, man ... the ol' Mopar vehicles don't have the reliability that the new Challenger will have when it hits the streets. ;)

Markw, If you want a real treat, get yourself some good headphones and drive 'em with that Marantz receiver. They should sound fantastic. My Grado headphones haven't performed the best with several of the new-era receivers that I've owned. But, when I plug them into an old Sansui, they come to life.

Man, memories..... I had a pair of the L250s. Those things were great! I also still have my HPM 60 & 100s, Carbon fiber woofers, ahead of their time. Some of those older units really sounded great. One of my all time favorites were the Infinity RS-4b's from the early 80’s. I am still looking for a pair of those. Best Jazz speakers I have ever heard! I love vintage gear; the receivers, like the Marantz and old pioneers really were well built units, and will last forever.

Memories!

I have a pair of Grado 80's and a pair of Senn 580s. This has been my headphone amp of choice for several years now.

And, reliability notwithstanding, those old hemi's oozed power and personality by the bucketfull. ...and a little oil on occasion as well. ;) I had a '71 Duster with a 225 slant six. I couldn't kill it. What finally did it in was the new wife wanting air conditioning, whichj the car lacked.

but, on the whole, I was a GM man and always wanted a Buick GS convertible. I'm also into comfort.
